Blu-Ray available now for PC

How has the industry in Wilmington been doing lately?

It's gone from 'The place they shoot Dawson's Creek' to 'The place they shoot One Tree Hill'. : 0 They shoot 'Surface' here now, too. The feature stuff is few and far between. It is too bad. I used to help out with a lot of video assist, 24 frame playback and publicity shoots for a while. I'm back to programming computers and now doing video for th internet.

The state and county is offering up some tax incentives for productions to try to compete with Canada. The exchange rate and incentives Canada offered a few years back just dried everything up. Hopefully it will come back around a little bit. Canada is a four letter word around here.

That sucks. I think some of the last sets I went on there were Shallow Hal and Black Knight, as a visitor. Its a shame. I really hope Joe Dunton is doing well there. The man is amazing. A real great rental house to deal with, too.

I'm sure they are doing fine...maybe not kickin it like they were a few years ago...but doing OK. There are still a lot of decent budget commercials coming through. A lot of the crew I know are finding work regionally. Hopefully things will turn around at some point in the not too distant future.

The beach is still here and the Firebelly still has dollar tacos on Mondays...so I'm happy.

Actually HDTV has the biggest market share dollarwise for all televisions sold. It is true that only one out of ever 3 televisions sold is an HDTV but since HDTV is more expensive it still has a bigger market share.

Sorry to jump back into this, but somebody mentioned "downloadable movies".

Look, if we were able to download movies and not have to deal with discs or tapes or anything else, then we'd have EVERYONE making movies and lining them up on the service. ANYONE could get on there, but they would probably have it where someone couldn't charge a premium if they made an independent movie or some sort of regulations on it like that.

Yes, anyone can make a movie but they can't make a movie. That's why they've got festivals all over the place and film equipment is priced so high, so that the film industry can filter out the nobodies from the somebodies, sad but true. If an eight-year-old kid could go out and make a movie with his HI-8 camera and pay the fees to get it on some sort of video distribution service, then we've got a problem. That would mean anyone could make a movie and you know what that means? Less money for the serious filmmakers.

Now this is all assuming that there'd be viral videos on there too. They could very well come up with something like Hollywood Video or Blockbuster and only allow professionally distributed videos or simply keep it at the On-Demand Pay-Per-Vue sort of setup.

Add to that, since people still hardly know how to use computers, I doubt they'd go through some sort of internet-based web service for movies and add to that the instability and volatility of computers (ie. hard drive crashes galore and general user-error), then a download service won't work unless it's like it is now on cable, but even then, some people don't know how to get to the On-Demand menu.

Also, there's just too much money in theatres and physical formats than to switch to some isolationist download program for new features. How lazy can the world get? People just need to go out to the store or movie theatre, walk or drive, they just need to get out of the freakin' house.

Blu-ray, as I've looked at it a bit more, seems to be pretty well set up right now regardless of delays. HD-DVD's are at Wal-Mart by the way, I saw some of them the other day, but I didn't see any posters pointing them out or anything.

Blu-Ray might be a waste in a game machine, BUT it is in there not only for gaming, but to sneak a Blu-Ray player into every house. (And actually it isn't a waste in a gaming machine, because developers are already having problems cramming everything onto one DVD9 disc for Xbox 360 games). And 25GB is not too big for a game-media system. I've already filled up my 20GB Xbox 360 HDD. With HiDef downloadable content and downloadable games becoming more and more prevelant in the gaming industry, a 25GB HD isn't that big at all. The gaming industry is changing... 2 years ago, 1GB would have been overkill for a game system. But it isn't all about just gaming anymore...it is the whole media experience.

How the hell did you already fill up you 360HD???

1st thing you do is delete all the preloaded crap...then delete demos when you are done with them...and screw downloading movie trailers and crap...thats what a computer is for.

I'm just aware that I forgot to tell you something important that's happening in Europe and you probably don't know:

Worldchampionship in Soccer in HDTV and so for about the last 6 months ALL TV stations are talking day and night about HDTV, BLuRay and HD-DVD...

THAT's a real push for the discs:
they mention it at least once a week in the daily news (they highly exaggerate over here) and in Switzerland we have now the first HD-cable-TV servers and till the end of the year they want HDTV in the whole cablenet in Switzerland.

Then: if you buy NOW a HD-DVD movie, you get the DVD for free and so people say: well, NOW I don't have the player yet, but I'll watch the free DVD and next year I still have its HD-DVD.... just some bucks price difference between DVD only and HD-DVD+ free DVD.

For the players: in Turkey they have been using ONLY VCD-Players and 99% of the movies used to be VCDs (in Switzerland you even can't buy a VCD-Player... in Turkey they have tons on no-name and TM-VCD players) and they NOW start switching to DVD players.... they earn about 190 USD per MONTH! - it's a poor country .... but EVERY one has a cell-phone and a VCD player.... in Switzerland it's just one step over it: EVERYbody has a DVD player even if 6 years ago many would have said and actually said: "I'll never need a DVD player - my VHS player does a good job!" - they ALL have the DVD player today and tons of original DVD movies.... at least 8 dollars each! (some even 35 dollars).

I'm sure also BluRay and HD-DVD: this year, they'll say: "too expensive" and "what for?" and 2008 50% of them will owe one..... :) ... and they'll sell perhaps 80% movies in HD with free DVD, so why not buy the player for it?

back to the championship of this summer: will be recorded with P2 and broadcast in HD so many soccer fanatics (and there are about 500'000-1'000'000'000 people that will go crazy for this HDTV-championship sorry: HDTV-soccer-championship) will go and buy a HD-ready screen just to be able to invite the best friends for the big party (it's at least like superbowl in the USA) and what will they watch with their HD-ready screens AFTER the championship? ..... HD-DVD and BluRay movies!!!! - as they don't really cost more than ordinary DVDs. So, christmas 2006 will be the start for the big sell of HD-movies on either of both formats.... and of course the HD-games for PS3... (e.g. FIFA soccer 2006 ;) ).

Our magazines and TV-publicities are FULL of clue-words as: HD-ready, HD-beamer, HDTV, BluRay and HD-DVD. So, many people will say / or think "You don't have a HD-ready screen?" and "You don't have a BluRay player? .... Man, do you live behind the moon?!" - that's the cruel world of the teenies and twens as it always has been with the PCs, the home computers, electronic games and the cell-phones.... even at primary school over here some kids are so cruel with their brand-new cell-phones towards kids with older models or would you believe it: kids with NO cell-phones! ("WHAAAT?!!!! Aren't their parents afraid if they can't phone them?")

Over here in Europe, HD-DVD and BluRay = HDTV. Publicity tells it that way... As if HD-ready screen and HD-cannels weren't the full package....

Go BluRay! - Go HD-DVD! (in 2009 we'll all own BOTH drives as they will cost 29,99 USD as PC burners and hybrid drives will cost 49,99 USD)
