Blowout problems

Hey guys,

Went outside today during the afternoon to shoot some footage on a DVX100A and had a massive problem with blowouts. I was shooting an apartment building that was cream colored (and the light was shining on it) and very little was showing up (not to mention it wasn't really picking up any shadows on the wall). I checked the IRIS and GAIN and all that and it seems all okay. What do you think the problem is? There is no way that this is how it should look. What settings should be camera be on (normally) if I were shooting something outside? Any help would be much appreciated!

A couple things you can do:

- Use your ND filter and then bounce some light onto your subject to compensate.
- Try to avoid shooting at a hot wall like that. Keep your background in shadow, if possible.

Im not sure what your skill level is with the DVX, but there are built in ND filters. When you are out in high exposure areas, you throw the swtich on the side of the camera to either of the two ND filters, then adjust your gain accordingly.

I suggest you set your white balance too, as you should every time you go out to shoot.

Hope this helps,

just curious - were you getting the ND1/8 or ND1/64 warning in your display....
Yea I think I may have remembered seeing that. So basically you guys are saying I shouldn't have shot on a hot wall... it just feels like I should be able to to some degree...

Of course you can. Just take care to bring the exposure down to where it should be -- by using the Neutral Density filter.
