"blow up" standard def for 16X9 TVs, special DVD?

I can make a DVD I really don't like. I shoot with a DVX100A in letterbox. On my hi def TV the DVD has pillars on the sides, because I'm working in standard def. And it has black bars on top and bottom. The project is 16X9. So what I really need is a sort of DVD blow up to 16X9 version that will play on a big hi def TV in a non-distorted way.

Can this be done? Who does it and how much does it cost?

Thanks for your help, you experts.

With your current footage, you can crop it in a 16:9 timeline and output as widescreen. The results will not be as good as shooting squeeze, though.

yes I would do the same as this.

make sure you know how the footage is going to be projected.
if it's standard 4:3 go Norm
if you want the widescreen look but it's 4:3, shoot letterbox
if you know it's going to be on a 16:9 widescreen, go Squeez

No, I'd shoot squeeze any time you want widescreen, even if the output is going to be 4:3. Much better in post that way.

The only time I'd use letterbox at all is if you want widescreen and are going to play directly from the tape. But if you're going into post at all, shoot squeeze. You can always output as 4:3 letterbox -- and with DVD, it's not even necessary (the DVD player will do it for you).
