Blotchy lighting (party)

Hi Ive been sent this reference image for a short I will light. In motion it almost seems like there are multiple lights 'swinging around' as the various 'patches' seem to move independently.

Any Idea how to do?

My plan was a couple of cookies (cookaclouris) with rgb gel 'randomly' stuck on and two crew 'wobble' them during the shot.

But looking at this image maybe a few coloured lighs face away from set and hit mirror balls - I dont know if they are available on amazon!

Any thoughts..blotchy.JPG

There are a lot of fixtures in those genres of party/event/concert lighting that will easily do what you’re looking for, but certainly aren’t as common in tv/film.

Your idea of using what you have is probably a good solution n a budget.

I actually did a BTS video awhile back for a TV ad that was set in a "club" on an LED set.

The whole set was very much lit up with moving, colored lights. In fact, my interview key light was probably the only "white" light that was in the video, except for the final scene of the actual ad, which was an "outdoor" scene where they faked sunlight.

All of the background lighting and the hair lights in this frame are coming from the set. I brought in a small key light, Aputure 60x with a small octobox, for the key.

They had a lot of colored lights hooked up to the lighting board and working off of the music cues. You can see a bit more of the BTS here if you're interested:

Something like this, maybe?

Well the shoot is done now!

My obervation is that at 800ISO1/100/F2 she had to be withing 16in of the light.

Clearly 'the lights at 'real discos' are very powerful. (its a while since I was at a 'real disco'!!)

Ive aquied some 150w cob fresnels in an acution (desisti) .. that would be a step up from the Dedos. (which were a minor ad to my gear load out) . but really one needs an ap300/600 or five with the spotlight adapters.

So the linked thing might be a bit weak.. but useful :)

Traditionally we hit mirror balls with Lekos (i.e. tungsten ellipsoidals, aka Source 4's). In more recent days we generally use Lustres which are the RBG LED replacement for Source 4's, although still not quite as bright. I would think that tungsten Source 4's must be quite affordable these days, they are traditionally stage/theatrical fixtures and thus plentiful, and being tungsten would be considered near-scrap by most. At 750W, they'd still run comfortably off household circuits and while bulky are not difficult to manuever by a smaller crew. You'd give up programming color cycling of course, relying on gels (and thus losing output) but for a white light mirror ball effect, should be pretty punchy. And this style of lens with shutters (what everyone calls projector lenses now) is of course an incredible helpful utility, for filling bounces precisely and self-flagging applications.

Yes Ive been eyeing a 'projector lens' but I think I will go amazon/bowens as it can then go on my godox 200 or ap 600.

The 150 cob desitis a also an interesting move into 'lensed' light although not the real lens deal
