Grabs from a music video we shot two days ago with my DP and film production partner Kevin Joelson, aka mediamilitia here on the forums.
Grabs look like they got squeezed in the conversion, also you should all know by now they look a little dark on them PC monitors.

Quicktime clip should be up by the end of the weekend.

shots look awesome, as always franck. I would sure like to see what you could do with a 35mm adapter. Can't wait to see the video

That wont happen...I hate the look of the mini 35mm. I'm not a big believer in throwing more glass in front of the 1/3 chips of the DVX. I know some people swear by it...I would rather adjust my shooting for the medium rather than try to make DV mimic the look of 35mm with a lens adapter. In order to get shallow DOF, I just get creative with the distances between camera, subject and background...As a DP I recognize the limitations and advantages between the different formats and adapt a style that fits each one.
The kicker for me was when I saw footage of a DVX100A with the mini35 shot with what I call my personal Zeiss prime set. The lenses are a full set of pristine Zeiss 2.1 MK II standards and are extremely sharp on 35mm. The footage from the DVX with the mini 35 came out funky. Definitely unacceptable by my standards so I refuse to by into the mini35 gimmick. Too much glass for the image to go through for the low res 1/3 video chips in my opinion.

I've grown to like long depth of field better than shallow, you can play with the frame more instead of throwing everything but the foreground out of focus.
Shallow depth of field is good when it serves a purpose, for like suspense, or intimacy.

I really like the location and the lighting.. was any of it natural or is it a big HMI hiding somewhere?

As far as 35mm adapters they serve their purpose. Not all of the lenses you use will have a shallow DOF. For me its just the flexibility to use the DOF if I want to use it .... and I do. Though I understand your point about too much glass and too little resolution.

 Also can't wait to see the video

OH yeah, I just got a G5 and its setup next to my PC and everything is MUCH brighter on the G5. I even calibrated all three of my monitors to NTSC then to each custom and they are still radically different. Looks like we'll let the production monitor dictate the color. :embarasse

Your screen grabs look great. I agree with your point of view and you are certainly talented enough to adjust your style to get the most out of the medium you are using. I think much of the attraction to the mini 35 is from someone like me who is not so experienced and is looking for a quick way to get a comparable look. Why learn when I can pay - its that instant gratification thing.

Great work

The pc monitors are not gamma calibrated like a tv or mac monitor, they have much lower gamma... You can try and boost up the brightness, but on some older monitors it will always look darker. I always try to color correct in between what I see on the tv monitor and mac flat screen. Everyone is going to have a slightly different setup on his tv or computer anyway...
I'm a little dissapointed at how the stills posted here converted tho, they look so much better on screen especially the 5th and 6th one. It does not translate at all.

mmmm I like Instant Gratification

My monitors are all Samsung SyncMasters...so I guess I don't even have a Mac Display. I am looking at the Cinema displays though, 23" or 30". Are these better or still nothing close to a monitor?

PS: Have you see the HD gallery at apple.com I used to think a 20" monitor was out of the question...

Can't go wrong with the apple cinema hd displays. I've never used a properly calibrated monitor anyways, just a small television who's image is a closely adjusted to the mac monitor as possible. It's a balance I guess.
