thank god for this site!

just got my 100a. i need to blank some tapes in it, but i can't seem to get the timecode to stick on the tape. can anyone tell me the proper procedure?

i'm in the middle of pre-production on a music video and am getting nervous about using this camera.

thanks!!

Re: blanking tapes

Don't bother with it just use the record check button on top to set you back on time code. I never black strip a tape.

Re: blanking tapes

.....so in general you don't care what your timecode is? the camera i have seems to want to begin every tape at
2:00:00:00
no matter what i do (following manual as closely as i can).

you never have editing issues such as same timecodes in a single project etc.? i just can't get a handle on the concept of no set timecode.

thanks elvis!

Re: blanking tapes

you are preseting your timecode.. you can do that, if you want, but regen works well.

To be honest, I dont even use camera timecode anymore unless im shooting a feature that needs to be logged/or multi-cam shoots.

Re: blanking tapes

If your timecode is starting at anything other than 0:00:00:00, it probably means you have your timecode set to Preset rather than Regen (as Jarred says). If you want each tape to start at zero, set the menu setting to Regen. If you want each tape to have unique timecode, set the menu to Preset, and then change the preset for each time you change a tape (0:00:00:00 for the first tape, 01:00:00:00 for the second, etc).

Re: blanking tapes

Many shooters, including myself, use "Preset" mode for TC to designate reel number. Hour 1 means reel 1, hour 2 means reel 2, and so forth. This comes from the days when the Betacam field loads were 20 or 30 minutes, rarely 45 minutes. Of course with L format tapes running up to three hours it would not work with a large camera, but with a small tape under 60 load (I usually use the smallest loads I can get my hand on, 33 is my favorite) you can conceal your reel number in your TC.

Now days, this is not all that important, but it meant more in the era of the CMX and EDL based editing.

Re: blanking tapes

Striping a tape:

Striping originally had more to do with the fact that field recorders used a type of insert editing to have neat records. The earliest U-Matic field decks needed a blacked tape with clean control track to record. This was in the era before the tape could backspace and pick up sync (and TC).

Re: blanking tapes

thanks guy's,

let me explain further. i'm new to video/editing as well as forums. (any hints on etiquette would be appreciated). in a training dvd (total training) it suggested blanking tapes. this seemed like a wise idea especially if you forget to hit end search or rec check and end up with a blank spot on your tape giving you multiple timecodes on the same tape. wont this cause headaches, or is multiple timecodes not such a big deal? (what would be the effects in your project)?

anyway, i'd like to know that i can preset timecode if i choose to as well as use the hour digit to reflect my tape number.

here are my settings:
TGC REC RUN
FIRST REC RUN PRESET
TC PRESET SEL YES
and enter the time code i want (1:00:00:05 doesn't the manual suggest multiples of 5 for frame preset?). and then i'll put the cap on and record to blank the tape. what i end up with is something like 2:01:23:15.

thanks again, and i'm now desperado

Blanking the tape simply adds one pass on a small format tape that cannot handle it and head hours on your camera. I would advise against it.

[/glow]okay, got it....blanking tapes is a bad idea. so, what about the settings? did they look properly set to yield the timecode i was inputting?

Let me try it on Monday and tell you (I don't have the DVX100 in front of me right now).
