Blacks

I have been shooting a talk show in the limbo black / Charlie Rose style. In tight shots of the subjects the blacks look great, but on my wides the black gets milky in some areas and folds of the black backdrop become apparent. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the blacks darker on the my wide shots.

Thank you,
michael

Re: Blacks

As you go wide more light is allowed into the lens. Consider adjusting your exposure, your pedestal and possibly underexposing somewhat.

Yes - the iris goes from f1.7 to (I think) 2.8 at full zoom - try setting your wide shot to 2.8 and that should fix your problem (if in fact your close ups hid the folds at their settings).

If all else fails, yes, lower the master ped. Just make sure to have it lowered to the same degree as in the close-ups (ie re shoot the close ups if necessary). But stopping down the iris shouldn't be an issue regarding the "look" if you end up matching f-stops.

Re: Blacks

just wondering if you guys think adjusting the master ped is worth it in camera or if it's something that could be accomplished as well in post.

thanks.

Re: Blacks

I personally try and get as much info in the blacks especially and then crush in post. Now if you have a pro monitor that is calibrated you can make sure that you crush the blacks to how you really want them on your shoot. This would be ideal, but if it is at all hard to tell during your shoot I would reccomend crushing in post. Now I am a firm believer however of getting your image as close to the final product as possible while you shoot, especially with mini-dv, but getting rid of information like crushing blacks usually has minimal effect on the recompression of your 8bit footage.
