F35: Blackmagic video assist?

There's one (AJA 3GM) on eBay for $500 USD I think. More than Blackmagic Video Assist.... but you get 50p in HD

Is it worth it? I dunno.

Yes it looks like 422 max on Blackmagic video assist.

For Pixe5 you would also need SDI multiplexer to get 50p... but yes it will do all flavours of ProRes up to 4444 XQ!

And it has 5" 1920x1080 screen which is cool, plus a gazillion exposure tools.

Can you record variable frame rates on the BM Video Assist, or any of the external recorders? Or do you need to record 50P and then conform for slow motion for instance? Also any lag on this? Wondered if could be used as viewfinder with a loupe.

Lol, thanks Dennis - I'm one of the many people that read all couple of hundred pages of that thread! Knew there was talk of the Hyperdeck but couldn't remember exactly what the situation was! Cheers.

Only because I'm reading the whole 280+ thread for the second time now and was just on that page yesterday.

If I understand mac's post, it sounds like after 30p you have to switch to interlaced. I don't think setting camera to 50p and recorder to 25p for example will work as you'd be missing every other frame? Is that how you understand it?

I do fancy the Blackmagic Video Assist as a cheap recorder. I mean it's no Odyssey 7Q but I'm also not sure I'd put a 7" screen in front of my face for shoulder mount config via noga arm, etc..

So no actual slow motion recorded but can record 50P and then put that into 25P timeline or whatever, OK.
Steve

Nope. The only way you're getting 50p is over dual-link - either to a 7Q or a multiplexer that can then convert the dual-link 1.5G signal to a single 3G signal (which can then be recorded to the 50p-capable recorders that only have a single 3G input).

Mac's earlier solution was to record 50i and then convert that into 50p. But you're interpolating half of your image then, which renders pretty poor results in my opinion.

Ah ok, so no matter what the recorder can do you can't get 1080/50P over a single HD SDI cable? Can you not change the F35 output to 3G? I thought I could do this with the SRW9000 I used to have - there was a menu option to switch it - or is that just with the SRW and not the F35?
Steve

Just having quick flick through manual it seems that it's just the SRW9000 that you can switch between 1.5G and 3G. So the Odyssey obviously takes 2 cables in from the IF box and combines them to 3G yes?
Steve

You can usually turn off screen info on monitor ouputs I think? But I can't see any reference to 3G in F35 manual so I reckon it's not possible.
Steve

yeah you can turn screen off from what I read in super thread, but I still don't know if you can get dual link out of F35 body. It would be great however because it means you could setup the F35 stripped down with out IF box if you wanted too.

Steve do you own F35 or going to rent one?

You can buy a F23 and look for the F35 super35mm upgrade kit for probably ten's of thousands of dollars so you have switchable sensor in your camera. lol
