Other: Blackmagic Video Assist 4K new FW adds Waveform

Groovy scopes. But still no ability to very basically dial out the significant green tint.

Sums up Blackmagic for me - always trying to create the shiniest, most powerful missiles. But somebody forgot to create the red launching button.

Ben - did you see this green tint on more than one copy?

Also, can this accept 4096x2160 and downscale to 2K? That would be pretty sweet for the FS7 and actually add something to what it can do.

I only had one unit, but when I went to look for a solution, it turned out many other users were saying the same thing - and BM Tech's actual posted solution was to invest in a $700 monitor probe and correction software to create a LUT.

A simple pair of Blue/Yellow and Green/magenta sliders would get it where I can trust it.

Not sure about the downscaling capability.

They addressed the tint via firmware a while back, but not sure if it actually helped.

I am in two minds about buying one. I mainly run and gun so I dont want to carry a pile of batteries.
Apparently, it will burn through the two batteries in less than 75 min. Although I am not sure how much better the competition fares, Atmos and Convergent Designs products.

Firmware could analyze and potentially calibrate a screen, but I doubt it's that complex.

If they haven't added the sliders by now, they probably aren't coming.

Nevertheless, I think the Ninja Inferno is so much better if you only need HDMI. For $995, you have 4K/60p.

(But the VA's temporary lower price might make more sense for now.)

How can a firmware make this monitor self measure its output objectively, can you tell me?

No, I can't tell you anymore than that because I don't know the engineering details. But I also don't really know what you're asking either.

Some monitors (DELL, etc.) have color calibration either built-in or it's downloaded later via firmware. Google it if you'd like. So if a monitor is too green and the company can't provide the end user with anymore options (sliders) to change the picture then how else are they going to try and fix it? Recall all of the monitors?

Releasing firmware with a global fix is very different than your suggestion that new "firmware could analyze and potentially calibrate the screen". How can firmware analyze the screen if the monitor has no built in hardware to do it? The point is that firmware calibration is based on theoretical values and not on actual measured output. Therefore firmware itself can't analyze the output objectively.

P.S. I just saw you said 'this' monitor. I don't know if it's possible for the VA, but just saying in general.

The monitor may have the capability in the hardware/software. I don't know, but they have added lots of features over time...same with their cameras.

On the BM forum, at least there is this hope:

"I was told by the distributor that Blackmagic is 'working on a firmware update that will give more control over the green tint that people have been experiencing with the Video Assist, but there is no ETA for this update'."

Just use the Assist as your monitor when creating your monitoring LUTs. That way, you can build some tint correction in and get as accurate as picture as the screen will allow.

Yes, apparently the last firmware update allows you to store six I think. I am more interested in battery live with larger batteries.

With the low price of this unit, I've been considering it as a recorder/monitor for my a7s while on my ronin. It would need to double as an onboard monitor for my fs7 though, for interviews, times when wireless isn't needed and I can just hang it off the back of the cam on an arm for producer, etc.

I like that it has loop through, so I can use it in between either camera and a wireless video system. *I have an ac7 OLED that I use for directors monitor, but currently do not own a wireless system, just rent for now*

Can anyone point out any flaws in this plan? I can get a used ninja assassin for a similar price to this new, media is cheaper, both run on less than ideal batteries but a dummy battery with d-tap can always solve that..... what am i missing?
thanks,- Wes

Yes, I am considering it as well; probably more for the exposure tools and larger size than for a recorder on my FS7 (I believe tests have shown there is nothing to be gained over the onboard XAVC-I) but would probably use the recording function on my A7rII.

I am curious though: this "green tint" issue is just on the display and not recorded, correct?

Yes it's just the display - but I wouldn't want to shoot baked-in 8 bit video on my A7Rii without an accurate idea of the colours.

You're exactly right, Ben.

I was totally thinking selfishly / how I shoot - which is in CineEI / SLog and with the limited WB options on the FS7 in this mode I typically know which I need to shoot at and I'd just match that on the A7rII when using it as a B-Cam.
