BlackMagic - URSA Mini

Altough a stills camera, Hasselblad is also pretty bad in lowlight. Even thought it's not cheap. Where you have the amazing quality on the one side you have to cut on the other side.

I ordered it once I saw the URSA trailer. Keep my A7s on the side for low light and photo's.

Good point that reaffirms the idea of choosing the right tool for the job.
We have a studio full of Phase One backs, but for onlocation daylight jobs we might end up choosing a 5D3 over bringing and setting up the Hasselbox or Mamiya.

I see the Ursa as being very suitable if the majority of your work is in controllable or well lit environments.
But for low light Id probably look in another direction.

Strange thing is...

The 4.6K Sensor follows the Pocket Camera Legacy, and the Pocket Camera doesn't shoot NO light, but it absolutely does well in lowlight. Now you get an extra stop at the top and bottom of what the Pocket camera already was (13), including the 4.6K fine noise, RAW...

Why wouldn't it be pretty solid in lowlight? I'm not talking zero light, but just ambient lamp light type stuff. It very well should be great.

With slightly higher base ISO, and one more stop of headroom in the shadows, it should be comparable, at ISO 2000, to what the pocket does at ISO 800. That's not crazy good, but good enough for most stuff.

All this speculation is fun, but let's hope we get some real test results soon. July release date is only 3 months away, but hopefully BMD will feel comfortable enough to post some DR test results before then. Even if it's the 4.6k sensor module on the Ursa Major body. I don't think anybody really expects to get 15 usable stops, but 13 would be very exciting.

I'm very interested in this camera, but I don't want to place an order until I see some reviews on real production models. I think a lot of people here are in the same boat.

It's fun to talk about Black Magic cameras, but eventually everybody buys Sony A7S.

Or possibly the FS7... I'm on the fence between the yet-to-be-proven URSA mini and the now-well-known FS7. I'll likely go the Sony route because of the glass I already own, but I could be swayed if the BMD mini's argument is substantiated and product is available.

I pre-ordered an URSA Mini 4.6 with PL mount. Very excited to receive it. Currently using an F3 which actually still satisfies but fully rigged it is almost 30 lbs and too big/heavy. I tried an FS7 for about a week, and it is nice, but do not like the e-mount, do not like all the software issues, and it is still not a total solution. The image was 4k but not really better than my F3 (didn't try raw). The URSA with the EVF (ordered) and shoulder mount kit (ordered) with some PL primes should be very nice.

Very excited to see the Ursa Mini and use it this year with our NX1 but just read the site again and its saying the Mini 4.6k model only does 120fps in HD. Not saying that is bad but I thought that was the 4K model specs and the 160 was the 4.6l specs or are both same frame rates just different camera sensors.

All I need is a usable ISO 1600. I dont need more ISO 90% of the time. I usually shoot at 850. I'm a C300 guy :-D
I like grain. Not noise. If the new 4.6K sensor can deliver usable ISO 1600 I'll be thrilled. I'm not greedy.....

The 4.6K Sensor in Ursa Mini's body will do 4.6K@60P (I believe), and then a cropped HD 120FPS

In Ursa, everything's doubled (as of now). I may be wrong about the Max @ 4k/4.6K.

A little of topic: every time I go to BM website it makes me laugh/cringe when looking at their product photos :D It's one of the weirdest presentation I have ever seen. Models holding their cameras, grading etc.
For example this one (nothing wrong with this guy, he's just doing his job - modelling, but combination of him and camera...) :

Has anyone of you in entire career have seen cameraman wearing make-up? :D
Haha, Blackmagic, c'mon! This is so kitsch :D

I really like the Ursa Mini 4.6k it hits a lot o check points for me, but still waiting on Samsung to see what they pull out of their hats on the next few updates to the NX1

Any idea why male models are chosen? In forums like this, the majority are men. So why not have female models holding a camera? :)

Models ??? ...Every camera op I've met looks exactly like this guy. ( you also have to learn how to frame a shot with your ears )

It's one of the first requirements you have to master to join the ASC, and it's what makes joining so hard.

"Damn it! I've run out of eyeliner and Spielberg is due on set any minute..."

Its called marketing and as one who works in marketing I can tell you BMD must be doing something right because their websites are usually very well received. Criticize them all you want but BMD will continue to draw eyes and the attention of people because they know how to brand well and market that brand. A lot of electronic companies having a hard time keeping their profits up there could learn a thing or two from BMD.

Its the classic Apple strategy. Market with beauty and clean but powerful images and people start to think your products are the elite and the best. Laugh all you want but it works. BMD should win awards for pushing the envelope of video gear marketing.

In my opinion, they should win awards for pushing technology. Meaning....I work in the tech industry (full time job), and it inspires me what they have done in the past 3 years....as far as changing the game....and I think EVERY industry needs a Grant Petty. I think the URSA mini is a REVELATION. Very exciting stuff.

Last time I saw hair like that was when I raced at the drags in highschool... none of those guys knew how to shoulder a camera either...
