BlackMagic - URSA Mini

URSA mini..incredible specs, but I didn't like the picture quality.. I will go for two BM micro..with speedbooster

Wat? There's only one video of example footage out so far, and it was from a beta cam...

And what didn't you like about it?

You don't get it.

Oh brother.

Actually, complaining enough does seem to make things appear.

Market segmentation benefits companies. They are biased toward oversegmentation. They have totally brainwashed you.

Duh. Does this really have to be injected into every DVXUser thread? "It's not the camera, it's the operator." We know.

Basically you're saying, "No complaining. If you don't like it, be quiet, and move on." Well, you're complaining about our complaining. I say to you, if you don't like this thread, be quiet, and move on.

Good post.

For the ND issue we can say it a million times but it doesn't change the fact that the camera will not have built in ND filters. Yes people have the right to discuss anything they want about the camera but this thread is a general conversation about the camera and its capabilities and not just a thread on its lack of ND filters. If anybody just really feels the compulsive need to say it over and over again like it will magically alter the camera when they wake up tomorrow then please start a new thread about the "BMD no ND filter conspiracy" Then those who want to go back and forth over 49 pages of "how dare they" type of posts can happily do so while the rest of us talk about the features the cameras do have. Because after all thats the stuff that is relevant since thats what the camera will do when released.

It really does no good to go on and on about something the cameras will not have because it will not change and likely will never change on these particular cameras. The rest of us are complaining about the complaints because they are taking away from the relevant discussions about the cameras. Those of us that may be willing to buy the cameras as is would like to talk about the cameras and their current capabilities. We all heard everybody loud and clear that it was sacrilegious to not add ND filters and BMD should be tarred and feathered for not doing so. The point was made and we now have a compiled list of who will never buy the camera. Can we move on now for those who want to learn more about the camera and enjoy the NAB euphoria?

This camera is clearly not for everybody and I would never expect it to be. Please don't make it your life's mission to try to convince everybody else from buying the camera. I honestly feel as though if a camera doesn't work for some people they get upset that other people still like it. This isn't politics. Its a camera. I for one would love to buy this camera but I'm a m43 user with a lot of m43 glass and don't feel like the heavy investment of buying new EF lenses on top of buying the camera and a V mount battery system. If I had EF lenses it would be a different story but I do not. Wish they had a m43 mount/sensor version but alas they do not so I have to look elsewhere.

And if you can't swap an ND in critical circumstances ( I've done it in moving canoes, in the Arctic and from Olympic venues) then you just need to be a bit faster with your technique <g>.

Lee has that clip I use rather than a matte box. Saves the rigging and you can hold a few NDs in your pocket. Easy. The Mini with nice glass and a VND or Lee or something like it seems like it would suffice for most run and gun, no? YMMV. Sick as it sounds, i wonder if I can shoot with this puppy using a monopod. (That's how much I'm running when gunning :-)

does anyone have any info about base ISO for the mini ursa?
it think it looks pretty amazing on paper...4.6K, 15 stops DR, good size, good weight...V-lock batteries....good price...4:1 DNG should keep file sizes down...
of course we will see how it all plays out in reality...but i am more and more impressed with BM...with pretty much all their announced products actually....it seems like nothing is perfect these days and especially not out of the box, but they are really trying and pushing for price as well....
looking at canon? i am sure the 300mkII will do well and will be a good camera especially for low light and i like that someone is pushing AF forward...price is still acceptable i guess but...
sony FS7 is still pretty impressive and holds up well and is actually available right now....yes it won't win any low light battles but all around it is a pretty awesome camera and Cine E really is like raw (unless you really mess up exposure, but same goes for raw, so...)
red seems like they are trying to compete with arri and only arri....i am sure their 8k will be nice but they really trampled on their followers with raising the 10K/year upgrade path to something even higher....IMO the mini ursa might provide better files then scarlet dragon....
arri is happy working on the highest end and everybody up there seems to be happy and next year most big production will again go through them...(not so sure how long that will go on though)

one of the best things about the FS7 to me are the files straight out of the camera...pop the cards into a macbook pro, work in realtime with 4k timelines....yes, LUT implementation could be better but the batteries last all day, file sizes are totally manageable and the files look great, great, great....all this coming from a (now former) red owner, so power, storage and how to milk whatever system you have is always an issue....
i really hope the ursa files will be manageable and won't require a hackintosh and that there won't be a black spot issue or FPN (i seriously doubt there will be actually..)

sorry for the rant(ish) post...
my questions about the ursa mini are: base ISO? and any mention of any kind of LUT implementation? i did not notice any mention LUTs in the (great looking) EVF or 5" touch monitor either?

Now we are over the "OMG this camera has no ND" ....

2 things need airing about the camera......

1) Based on previous history with BM cameras, none have an OLPF . Is this the case with this camera ? Has it been a problem for BM owners with moire and aliasing with other BM cameras and will it be a problem with this camera.

2) Dataload .... I read somewhere that this camera pumps out about 500gb per half hour shoot time. Does anyone have a problem with that and if not how are you going to manage this data footprint on location?

moire and aliasing were very well controlled on the 4k sensor:

as for dataload, common sense and planning always pertain. i will likely use the various flavors of prores more often than RAW, because not every client wants/can handle the workflow. Whatever makes sense for the particular shoot, not "i need to always shoot raw because anything but raw is sacrilege", etc...

atomos's cfast 1.0 cards are reasonable in cost and if they are compatible, would be interesting to see what formats they will be able to handle.

For the ND issue we can say it a million times but it doesn't change the fact that the camera will not have built in ND filters.

But perhaps if BM hears enough about it their next model might have them. Or perhaps they or a third party might make something that could add it to the current model. And if nothing else it's an interesting talking point - which is a valid reason in itself to participate in these forums. That's my take on it anyway.
From my point of view built in NDs are pretty vital - try changing them from inside a hide when a wary animal is standing 50 feet away and see if it sticks around! Also for wildlife work as well as the difficulties of swapping filters the less you have to carry and juggle while perched on a cliff or in a metre of water the better. It is a niche sector of the market though I know.

Pretty sure no one here thought that by pointing this out, somehow it would magically
give it ND filters. More a hope for next time. Maybe anything 'negative' should be
prohibited because "I don't want to hear that, I just want to talk about how
awesome it is and it's capabilities, not what it can't do?" Or maybe there should be
a limit....you can only point out a particular 'supposed shortcoming' 5 times and after
that it is just 'piling on' and we should not be allowed to point it out anymore?
And if people tell you how stupid you are for wanting that feature, you can't defend
you choice either, because it's been pointed out 5 times already.....
(As an aside, if lots of people are pointing out a particular issue, maybe you
don't want to listen, but if Blackmagic is as smart as I think they are, they will notice.)

Fine, great things about it. Form factor....shoulder mount is nice. EVF (I know it's expensive
but we are staying positive here). Nice side screen that isn't as big as URSA but looks nice.
Great codec options. Supposedly really good DR. Like I said, I like most things about it.
I'd rather more physical switches and dials as I'm not a touchscreen person, but again
thats negative so just ignore that aside. Price is good. Lens mount.....mmmm...ok I guess.
Lots of people will buy it, I'm sure. Good stuff and crappy stuff will be shot with it.....
depending on the skill of the DP.

There are some seriously spoiled 1st world brats here, man. I would love to see some of the work from these constant camera detractors who claim a camera is only worthy if it beats a certain ISO or lack of built in NDs. Seriously, how spoiled n petty do you have to be to whine about stuff like this?

We would've killed to see specs like this at this price range 2yrs ago. Learn to photograph well n quit the crying. It ain't like the thing has a hardware/software issue or bugs. Geez.

:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) lulz!

If I remember correctly Kholi said it's not an issue with the 4k sensor. I'd like to know whether it downsamples or crops to 2k.

Did anyone find out the frame rates for the windowed sensor modes? It can do 60fps at 4K but I wanted to know what it can do in the other windowed modes such as 3K Ana and 2k. I heard it can do 120fps in 1080p but I want to know if there are intermediate frame rates such as 80fps in 2k for example.

2K is a down
windowed is 1080 1:1 crop from the sensor (120fps)

rolling shutter - non issue for the most part. Really really good.

Base ISO 800

Will this camera make me a grilled cheese sandwich?
Coincidentally, CNet just did a story on a fully robotic kitchen that is supposed to go on sale by 2017 (and, no, it was not on Kitchen Rumors!). Hypothetically speaking then, any connected device can make you a grilled cheese sandwich - provided you'd invested a few quid into these robotic chefs too.

BTW, the robotic hands, similar to what you might see on the automated assembly plant, were designed off motion capture, where they indeed emulated a real chef's hand movement. And, of course, if robots can do the kitchen, they should be able to do a film/TV set as well. A single operator/director + a handful of joysticks + motion control + a few monitors and ... voila!
