Blackmagic Pocket 495.00 Summer Sale

Hey brandon sorry to hear bout your bmpcc. I just reluctantly sold a good one before this announcement but having a bit of sellers remorse and thinking about taking the plunge again since you just cant beat the price. I'm just a little concerned these cams may be rejects from thei lab... I really hope not cause I reall want black magic to succeed as a company since they seem offer us low budget filmmakers such affordable options.

Yeah... it was really messed up, but so far they're doing their best to replace it. Sadly no stock there at the moment. I just want the next camera to work correctly!

The camera is a good option for sure and I think it's worth the sale price. I bought two of them to use for events in HQ prores mode. But don't fool yourself if your buying this for even work and intend on shooting in HQ Prores mode, in the end each outfitted camera winds up costing around $1,700. But again, the image quality is worth $1,700 in my opinion...it reminds me of a C100.

Camera Body - $495
EF to BMPCC Speedbooster (I got a $100 off deal through adorama when buing it with the BMPCC) - $550
Hotshoe mount - $25
Cage (you need this so quick release plates will sit flush) - $150
1x 256GB SD card fast enough to record HQ Prores - $288
2x 128GB SD cards fast enough to record HQ Prores - $180
Battery Solution (I use a 10 AA battery case with xx eneloops) - $50

Don't expect to shoot raw for event work, even if it was in budget, there aren't fast enough cards that are also big enough to shoot more than 20 minutes. Also, you want large cards for event work because there's no way of knowing how much time is left on your card. There's also no way of deleting files or formating in camera so you will need to bring a small laptop in case you have to format a card.

Other cons:
The LCD is antiglare so it looks pretty bad when looking off angle.
Internal batteries are not going to be an option for event work.
only a few preset WB options in Prores
Even with the speedbooster you have a 1.75x crop factor meaning you will need to by the tokina 11-16 or other wide option if you dont already have one and are used to shooting full frame.
Editing system and archival requires significant amount of space.

Other Pros:
Focus peaking is easy and useful
Zebras are nice
Dynamic range is great and when shooting raw you can really save highlights
When using a speedbooster or MFT adapter you can have declicked apertures
I like the amount of DOF you get with the camera...a good compromise
Eventually RAW SD cards will be available that are going to be big enough and won't break the bank...eventually.

I didn't need a Speedbooster. I also haven't really liked how it looks to be honest with you. I feel like the edges are more blurry with the speedbooster... I prefer native lenses anyway.

FWIW the BMPCC Speedbooster w/ the Sigma 18/35mm is stunningly sharp edge to edge with some of the best bokeh you'll see...the image has a mojo that gets commented on by virtually every client we produce for.
I prefer this combination to any prime in my kit and I've got a lot of great glass..
An f/1 30-60mm zoom is simply amazing and the MB SB definitely improves the IQ not the other way around.

With a simple MB direct adapter for $140 this one lens gives me 30 - 60mm and 50-100mm coverage - I haven't touched a prime for TV or film work since I got the combinations.

Awesome! I have all native MFT lenses at the moment, and I'm not super interested in switching just to use a speedbooster, but you never know :)

Jimagine, have you tried the Sigma 17-50 with the pocket?

I almost picked one up until I realized that a simple Metabones dumb adapter would give me med closeup and closeup focal lengths @ f/1.8 with the same uniquely great zoom.

If you haven't tried the 18-35 on the pocket, you should, if possible.
I really didn't get all the hype until I shot with one on the BMPCC w/the MB.
It's that combo - the fastest zoom in the world using the "boosted" area of an already world class lens that really takes the BMPCC to the next level IMO.
And the fact that it has one of the best manual focus rings in the business and internal zoom and focus...it's kind of a holy grail lens for me and what we produce.
I've never seen anything coming out of that camera that looks as good as what this combo produces, and I've looked at and shot a ton of footage with them.

Reason why I'm interested in the 17-50 is for the image stabilization during handheld shots and run and gun situations. Will prob pick up the 18-35 for tripod mounted shots later. Wish it had IS. How is it handheld with the pocket and SB?

The one I got from EVS on Friday works great from a picture quality standpoint, but battery life is so short. I ordered a kit form Amazon that includes a separate charger and 2 additional batteries. I already had MFT to Eos, MFT to FD, and MFT to Arri B lens adapters from my GH2, so all of my new and old Canon glass works with the BMPCC as well as my lenses from my Arri 2C. I'm ordering a c-mount adapter for my old Bolex/Switar lenses. The Plus cards seem to work as well as the Pro cards, although "Card Full" starts blinking about halfway through recording in RAW mode, and all of the cards that I've tried so far seem to stop with 1.29 GB left on the card. No dropped frames though. I've got a 64GB 95MB/sec card on the way to see if it will yield the same results. If so I'm going to talk to BM and see if this is normal. If no, then they are going to need to fix it.

Just ordered mine on B&H.

Side note, the sale was originally supposed to go through 8/31, but now says it's only valid at b&h through 8/4.

If anyone was waiting(like I was) the time is now, or before the fourth

I took the plunge and ordered today. Last day of sale and price is just........too hard to pass on. We'll see how this goes.

Been playing with mine for a couple of weeks and I'm loving it. Still got a steep (steep!) learning curve on Da Vinci. Still need a lot of gear to make it functional. But if I buy wisely this could be one mean little machine. Falling slowly but surely out of love with my HVX. The 200 will still be working, putting in the hours for event type opportunities and maybe even proposed instruction videos for work as I slowly get my boss hooked on the idea of an internal media department. But I think outside of business hours I can come home to my new lady. She's not CCD but has some of the look I love, at a much higher apparent resolution than the numbers imply. Sure CMOS foibles drive me nuts. She doesn't have P2, the trust your life on it reliability. Maybe she can't do much without being wrapped many times her weight in gear. Okay so I will probably have to record separate audio. And maybe I can't colour correct to save my life and many hours will have to be invested there. But man is she a beauty. She has lit a spark and I bristle with new possibilities. With some careful planning this really could be my S16 to your S35. Or do I dream the dreams of a doomed new love. My wallet is urging caution. He doesn't believe. He knows that $500 savings will cost me thousands. Knows my dark side that sucks the life from his very folds. But where would the world be without dreamers.

I didnt believe the offer would last for so little time...was thinking to get one but I didnt! Now I regret it! Thats life...:crybaby:

read on BMPCC forum BH said 3,000 units on backorder. Just thinking about BM's ability to fulfill both time and quality wise. Hmmmm.
