BlackMagic Cinema Camera Verses DSLR For Price

It looks like an awesome camera, the drawback is the sensor size. It is a large sensor, but it's the "smallest" of the large sensors, m4/3. I might get one, but the D4 and D800 with clean HDMI attached to an external recorder mean comparable quality codecs with a full frame image.

The Black specs say 2432 x 1366 RAW and 10-bit 4:2:2 SDI.
I think that beats 8-bit 4:2:2 1920x1080 with line-skipping artifacts on HDMI.

Did someone mention price?

Yeah it's cool no doubt. 2.5k and 1080 resolution isn't that different as well as 10 bit and 8 bit aren't even that different compared to the Full Frame M4/3 difference. Full Frame is 4x bigger than M4/3. That's means super shallow DoF. It's a very cool look. I had 2 M4/3 cameras in the past and there were definitely drawbacks to the size.

Wow! Wonder if you'd care to recant your challenge to me of "why Thunderbolt vs HDMI" ? ;)

sensor size is closer to super35 than 4/3 so less DOF and more bokeh than 4/3 I'm rocking to these sensor sizes. Goodbye full frame :)

Hi Brian,

Yes it does look like an awesome camera. Given the way DSLR's line skip like Bob (eteam) mentions, + 10bit verses 8bit, it could be actually better than the D4/D800 in resolution/DR.

Let's hope it has some weather-sealing to protect it from all the drooling!

As all of us have been, I was overexcited too... until my evil twin started to whisper into my ear....
- Spotted rolling shutter and some banding in one of the demo movies.
- No high speed (FS700 wins)
- No interchangeable battery ( Hi Flip Video- who's your mama?)
- Fixed LCD reminds me of my Fiip Video HD mated to a tablet (but on steroids)
- Touch screen is sweet when it's nice and warm and dry outside but how does it perform in freezing cold driving rain?
- At least the Start/Stop button ought to be haptic
All else looks very cool !

Of all the sins which might be present, rolling shutter (with a smallish sensor?) and banding (with 10-bit or deeper video output?) are two of the least likely candidates.
Maybe they are taking a cue from the Canon folks -- use sample videos which make your product seem horrible.

why the hell would you want to attach an external recorder to this? it's an external recorder with a sensor, made by an external-recorder maker; it shoots 12-bit RAW, ProRes and DNxHD, all internally to an SSD drive

I decided the size just isn't enough to stop the purchase. I just canceled my D800 order and placed an order for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

Probably Vimeo compression.

I think high speed is about as important as weather-proofing. Rare which it's an actual need.

Not a problem as long as it can be powered by an external, which apparently is the case.

SmallHD or TVLogic is your savior.

The rolling shutter issue is not a vimeo codec issue, but even so, then what? No Vimeo ?? They acknowledge it's there. if they can completely eliminate it upon shipment- Great!

Until you realize that there a difference between pitching waterproofedness of gear to a producer/client (important to Discovery and Nat Geo BTW) and pitching HiSpeed 1080p to an ad agency that's shooting some food, fast car, romantic interludes though Irish Marshes yada yada.
One Red Lobster 30 second spot can easily convince you that a waterproof camera is not nearly the same argument as a High speed.
Battery. My only questions is - is it factory replaceable? LiIons wear out eventually and even LiPolymers aren't forever batteries. We need to know if they are in there for good or replaceable.
I hadn't read about the HDSDI out to monitor, That's fine. My Manhattan LCD has those inputs.
