Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

As far as you know, is the Canon EF mount and the EF-S mount virtually the same? I'm not sure what the difference is, but I have a Canon T3i that came with an 18-55mm EF-S lens, and just want to know if an EF-S lens will work on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.

They are essentially the same, but not entirely. There is something different -- a different pin or something, that can prevent an EF-S lens from mounting on an EF camera. The idea being, if it's an EF-S lens, it won't cover the full-frame sensor. Not all EF-S lenses employ that additional pin (or whatever it is), for example, the Tokina 11-16 can be mounted on a 5D Mark III. But I think all Canon EF-S lenses employ it.

I think John said that the mount on the BMCC is EF-S compatible.

The reason they said EF mount is because that is what it is. Even Canon doesn't call it a "Canon" mount, because that would be confusing as there are multiple "Canon" mounts. EF, EF-S, and FD. I just checked my EF-S and EF lenses and they are the same and will mount on any EF compatible camera. The real difference is that the EF-S will not work on a Full Frame sensor like the 5D because it will vignette but there is no reason why you can't mount it on the 5D.

There is no conspiracy going on. I think people would want companies to give specifics when refering to lenses instead of just saying "yeah it takes canon glass..."

just an FYI to whoever was dissing ef-s lenses earlier in the thread ... some of them are incredible and on a par with L
the 17-55/2.8 and 60mm f2.8 macro in particular are amazingly good ef-s lenses

also the ZE mount terminolgy did not come from blackmagic - zeiss themselves made this up LINK

I think the 17-55/2.8 could be a very nice lens to use on the Magic Cam. It's a healthy amount of coverage, then you'd only have to rock the 11-16/2.8 and maybe two faster primes, 20/1.8 and a 35~50/1.4

my next EF mount purchase is either the canon 50/1.4 or the sigma 50/1.4 and I just can't decide on which (I've read every review online) or maybe, maybe ... a preowned 50/1.2

So... if the crop factor is 2.4, then all we have to do is multiply to get our effective focal length on the BMC, is this correct?

Distagon T* 15mm f/2.8 ZE
= 36mm

Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE = 42mm
Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZE = 50mm
Distagon T* 25mm f/2.0 ZE = 60mm
Distagon T* 28mm f/2.0 ZE = 67mm
Distagon 35mm T* f/2 ZE = 84mm

Here's the camera comparison chart I made using lens trig:

View attachment BMD Cinema Camera Comparison.pdf

The diagonal crop factor of the BMDCC relative to a FF/VistaVision camera like the 5D is 2.31.

On a 5D, the AOV of a 15mm = 108º = 7mm on a BMDCC.
The AOV of a 35mm on 5D = 61º = 15mm on a BMDCC.

You can look up the rest on the chart.

Careful with that 17-55. Lots of fringing in that guy.

Just saw this posted at comema 5d: "I have heard this about the whip pans too, so I grabbed the camera attached to a monitor, and I can tell you that is was pretty solid. I did not see rolling shutter at all, I think you will all be pretty impressed. "

Nice to hear.

Yeah, i've watched the clips a few times now looking for rolling shutter and I just don't think it will be too big of a deal. If it's as decent at say the AF100 the cam will perform well. I'm not really to concerned with low light shooting either. Get a image clean up to 800 and that should be enough. If they can manage 1600, all the better. Need anymore lowlight than that, borrow your buddies canon mk3 or c300. I still want to see more footage before I fully commit to buying though.

No one was dissing ef-s lenses, what I clearly said was the 18-55 kit lens was not very good due to non constant aperture, poor build and rather slow. If you are going to be shooting above 2k quality glass will make a difference.

He's simply saying that it's ridiculous that BM calls it a ZE mount, when it's a Canon mount. The only reason BM calls it a ZE mount is to help sell Zeiss products. Which is ridiculous. Kinda like Shane Hurlbut saying that the Canon 4k dslr sh!ts on the F65, Epic and Alexa.

Not sure where you're going. BM have NO relationship with Zeiss whatsoever. If anything they have a relationship with Arri as they have been working on stuff in RESOLVE with them. I suggested they buy some compact primes to test with, which they did. They just bought them from a local dealer in Melbourne.

Bummer about rolling shutter only. Planning to put this on my RC helicam which is much harder to tune for rolling shutter. My only hope is that it will be better than the gh2/canons.
I might be taking it apart to remove the int battery too. :) to save weight.
Way too early of course, but maybe if Vitaliy gets a hold of one he can hack it and add some frame rates or new features. :)
this is the craziest thread I ever did see, but I can't wait to get my hands on it.
The real thing this brings to mind is that it is a huge step towards leveling the playing field with the big boys. ...It's all about the script and content now!

Look the camera is heavy. I'd be impressed by your RC if it can lift this safely. And that rig is a worst case scenario for any rolling shutter camera....

Nobody says anything about the Audio capabilities of this camera. What is S/N ratio? THD?

In other words, is it practically possible to record quality audio in-camera?

Well the Blackmagic website says it has a integrated mono mic.. so if it can't record audio, whats the point of having the mic there , or the 1/4" TRS jacks :)
Not sure if it records audio in when in RAW mode though

I have seen no mention of VU meters but have seen 48K 24bit.
