Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

DR is such a subjective thing. their 13 stop number is a lab based number. I can't really say yet because they are still working on the sensor calibration and that's what affects noise a lot. Noise affects the DR.

My experince says it's not quite as good as an Alexa but it's pretty close, and it's way better than a 5Dmk2. I shot some side by sides and it was chalk and cheese.

Admittedly, I hope they can ek out every bit of that measurement. 13 usable stops would be pretty perfect.

I can't say.

it would explain the need for many stops of DR and the lack-of-need for no jello
(stars not moving quickly)

edit:
sorry for the double negative. I meant there would be no need to have fast read/reset times to avoid skew if it was for shooting in space

The ZE Mount is Zeiss-speak which reveals their strategic alliance on this project and forces them to say ridiculous things instead of simply pronouncing the word Canon.
excuse me, but wrong, the naming of the ZE SLR lenses isn't ridiculous.

Zeiss ZM - made for leica M mount
Zeiss ZA - made for sony A mount
Zeiss ZK - made for pentax K mount
Zeiss ZF - made for nikon F mount
Zeiss ZE - made for canon EF mount.

makes sense, doesn't it?:)

He's simply saying that it's ridiculous that BM calls it a ZE mount, when it's a Canon mount. The only reason BM calls it a ZE mount is to help sell Zeiss products. Which is ridiculous. Kinda like Shane Hurlbut saying that the Canon 4k dslr sh!ts on the F65, Epic and Alexa.

not exactly ...designing camera is a big project and is good thing to have big players as a partners ...of course they need to do little marketing for them ...but if they start saying that other lens are crap than it would be unethical ...

I've got no problem with capitalism. But if you aren't upfront, if you try to win my dollar by deception...I don't trust you. That said, on the sneaky scale, I'd only give BM a 1 out of 10.

c'mon they just call EF lens mount ZE mount ...everybody knows that is a same thing ... is not like they try to charge 15000$
for firmware update.....

It is my understanding of sensor and DSP technology that the problem isn't the recording of the footage but the raw data coming off the sensor. Right now that is 2.5k regardless of the recording mode. Even if you had a 720p recording format the DSP would still take the 2.5k raw from the sensor and process that. From the sound of it the DSP just cannot handle much more then 30fps at 2.5k which makes sense. That is a lot of work for that thing to do. Other cameras can do 60p because they actually have a sensor and DSP that are designed to run and process data that fast. For example some 60i cameras actually processed 60p in the DSP and then interleaved the 60p into 60i. The only way I think 60p could happen is if BM either (A) switched to a much more powerful DSP = money or (B) switched to an equally powerful DSP but one that could sample a cropped segment of the sensor which would mean it could process more frames. Perhaps the DSP they already have can do this but there isn't time to implement it before July. Personally I agree with John. Let them get the camera perfected the way it is and explore that option later.

A lot of sensor permit what is called windowing, that is only part of the sensor is read and it can be done much faster. That is why you see lots of time in cameras that they will tell you that they can do x resolution at speed y and lower resolution at faster speed. The fs-100 seems to use line skipping for its 480 and 960 fps speed.

Except windowing will make your FOV much longer and you still have to have a DSP that knows what to do with it.

Bummer about rolling shutter only. Planning to put this on my RC helicam which is much harder to tune for rolling shutter. My only hope is that it will be better than the gh2/canons.
I might be taking it apart to remove the int battery too. :) to save weight.
Way too early of course, but maybe if Vitaliy gets a hold of one he can hack it and add some frame rates or new features. :)
this is the craziest thread I ever did see, but I can't wait to get my hands on it.
The real thing this brings to mind is that it is a huge step towards leveling the playing field with the big boys. ...It's all about the script and content now!

What I am saying is that the way they bent over backwards not to name Canon or Nikon reveals the very tight nit nature of their strategic alliance with Zeiss. I am not trying to suggest however that they are trying to be sneaky in any way.

At the risk of repeating myself from another thread:

The thing that I am seeing here is that there is absolutely no reason that Blackmagic themselves could not create an interchangeable mount for this camera. The extended tube of their current mount could easily be interchangeable with others for correctly positioned flange distance. This is not high tech and is easily accomplished with a minimum of knowledge about design and engineering. Selling those accessories alone with a rock solid mount for Nikon, M43, and PL is absolutely in the spirit of their strategic alliance with Zeiss and far better than the adapters we have been speaking about thus far.

Heck, they could call it the "Zeiss Universal Mounting System" and they would have a total winner which pleased their strategic partner. As Zeiss already has a relationship to the other manufacturers in terms of partnership agreements and aperture/electonic control of iris's from them, this makes a lot of sense and has got to have been one of the reasons the alliance already exists. If this did come to pass, this camera would be a defacto backup in every filmmakers kit from that point going forward, if it isn't that already given the way things are going....

Further, I might add that the only reason we have not already seen something like this probably has more to do with negotiation between manufacturer's than technical reasons.
