Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Spoke to one of Blackmagic's authorised resellers down here in Australia - and whether or not this has to do with Blackmagic being an Australian company, I'm not sure, but we're gonna get the Blackmagic Cinema Camera for a cool $2830 :)

Which reseller? Videoguys has it for $3075 on pre-order which is a jip considering our high dollar and BMD being Melbourne based.

So... why didn't they go with C-mount instead?
Looks very promising though! Hopefully they'll go the S35 route or perhaps even Full frame down the road...

Just put my name down on the list at my local camera store (100 miles away, but local enough). I'm #3 in line and their first order will be 5 and BMD has claimed that they should get their first order by the end of August at the latest. We'll see if that holds up, but I'm freakin excited. Just wish I could have it for my short at the end of May, but the GH2 will do the job just fine until I get my BMCC (Black Magic Cinema Camera).

August??? At the rate that new cams are being released, who knows what will be coming in August. The antiquated Black Magic, C300, Scarlet etc will all be collecting dust by then. It's pretty bold to say this is the cam you will want in August. :-)

Yes... This is not an S16mm camera. I've seen so many people refer to it as an S16mm camera for no good reason. Most C-Mount lenses will vignette, and I'd even expect to be able to see the image circle itself in many cases.

Very, very good write up Frank.

And right there is why I think this camera as it is will never be used on a professional shoot... but at this price range, its the best camera out there. Also this being a cinema camera as they are selling it, with a tiny little sensor, and no PL mount... lame... Film stocks only very recently started to have a lot of latitude, because most films regarded as the pinnacle of cinematography were shot on old film stocks with about 5 to 7 stops of dynamic range... and that didn't stop nobody from doing films like The Godfather or Days of Heaven...

So, Raw capture, 2.5k and 13 stops for 3 grand is certainly a very, very good purchase, but its a stretch to call this a cinema camera.

Just sayin...

John, do you know if a square format (4:3) for anamorphic is on the way ???

I know that zeiss it's working on a set....

I've discussed it with them, and by accident, they've made a camera that can do it with their sensor choice. I doubt you'll see it on this model as they are working on making a certain part of the sensor active (16x9), and it's a lot of work to change that. Anamorphic is a very limited market for a camera they need to sell by thousands to be profitable.

I'm sure they'll go the S35 route after this succes and than
they'll probably make a switchable 16/9 4/3 ...

thank you for your test and your time

Well, it was a no money down, they'll call when they have it, so I get to decide sometime between now and then, but I would be shocked if anything comes along between now and then with its features in its price range.

Sincerely I don't understand how this camera will never be used on a professional shoot when moire/alias ridden 720p dslr 4.2.0 footage have been used in film that have won awards or been box office hit and the the tiny little sensor you are talking about is quite bigger than s16 film that again have been in Movies that have won oscars during the last years. There are many pro here and I am sure they are going to use it. I am no fan boy but this is a little bit out of order.

I have on another forum that it is supposed to be able to convert the audio into digital AES/EBU imput from the menu. If true that would be fantastic using something like the mixpre-D directly to the camera for best quality.

Pretty much this. There have been movies in the last 5 years that have been nominated for an Oscar shot on 16mm. Do we even need to get into the fact that Avatar was shot on 2/3 sensor cameras?

Interesting article here with sensor size, I think people should stop referring this camera to S16 as it is a bit bigger. It is nearer to the orriginal m43 size which is a little smaller than the gh2 sensor.

Agreed. I didn't mean to imply that it is closer to 16mm, just pointing out that smaller sensors/formats are still professional.
