Vinten Vision is very good, but costs much more $$$. Try them if you can. It's not camera - if you choose the right one it will serve you for years

We've taken this thread way OT, so enough tripod talk after this......
- MotoSteady by manfrotto and amost Merlin concepts are crap. Toss that back and get a fig rig if you must go manfrotto
- I just spotted a lot of great used options for you on ebay but you must grill the sellers of used heads particularly. Ask about....
• Age. really old heads will have gummed up or overly loose action. Stay away from anything more than 10 years old to be safe
• Do all the controls work properly?
• Are the joints in the sticks tight (esp on Miller solos) ? Any broken or worn clamps? etc.
Send me a private message if you need more feedback or ask at another thread. Let's just keep basic tripod Q out of this thread henceforth.

Yes. Indeed.

And to think a certain someone sneered that they..."wouldn't ever use a Mac compliant interface...and we don't need no stinkin Thunderbolt, we've got HDMI " Not you but he knows who he is, smarty pants ;)

I do not see that way. If anything, John’s footage shows how liberating can be shooting this camera in uncontrolled lighting conditions.
Imagine the amount of arse protection you are getting with that DR for those times when your aperture selection was not exactly exact.
Highlights, my present A camera needs to be protected from itself and its deplorable behavior handling highlights and their transitional areas. It appears to me that this camera has a nice roll off.
Lenses, how much easier can it be for those of us with Canon L’s.
Raw, so us to free me from some misguided choices when sitting up my baked in scene.
Even focus should be easier compare to a full frame camera.

THIS IS my last tripod reply. Thanks to all!!!

Wow! Finally reached the end of this thread. It's taken me all day. I feel like I just climbed a mountain! Do I get a prize or just the satisfaction of accomplishing it?

I'm not sure what else there is to talk about this camera right now. Every topic has been covered three or four times over in this thread.

Now it's a waiting game.

I guess a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they will have the camera because they won't understand its limitation. What I wanted at nab was just a large sensor camera head and output that could be captured. Guess what, this is much more than I expected and I understand the limitation to get that image quality. I won't say studio but controlled shooting and many won't be comfortable shooting with it.

I don't know about anybody else, but I started out with just passion, a couple of ideas and what I could afford. At the time that was a Canon HV20. Struggled with EVERYTHING from locking exposure to low light noise. I found that despite my troubles I loved capturing images (illustation was my primary art before this) and writing and directing. So to remove some of the technical challenges I sacrificed and got an HMC150. The struggle with that was soft picture, low light performance and getting a shollow DOF (I know it can be done, but it's hardly a feature of the camera). Soon after I added a T2i to the toolbox to fill in the HMC's weaknesses. Well that camera has weaknesses of it's own (moire, rolling shutter, no built-in ND etc). ALL of the cameras I've used have had really limited DR.

My point is twofold:

1 - I now no longer look for what is ideal, but what will work. "Work" being defined as what I can make pretty pictures and tell a story with. All cameras I have used have had weaknesses that have to be gotten around. Maybe I could get a camera that has no weaknesses for $50,000, but then again a camera costing $50,000 is a weakness in itself considering all the planning that goes in to bank robbery. That and I'm too pretty for prison.

2 - If this camera lives up to what it is on paper and there are no hidden surprises, this is a huge step up from what I currently have and for the same price. It also (provided there is a battery grip) seems to have the same weaknesses we have grown accustomed to using DSLRs. The devil you know and all that...

My pre-order is in.

Thank you.

We're only up to 150 pages... We can do better.

Just put my name down on the list at my local camera store (100 miles away, but local enough). I'm #3 in line and their first order will be 5 and BMD has claimed that they should get their first order by the end of August at the latest. We'll see if that holds up, but I'm freakin excited. Just wish I could have it for my short at the end of May, but the GH2 will do the job just fine until I get my BMCC (Black Magic Cinema Camera).

Spoke to one of Blackmagic's authorised resellers down here in Australia - and whether or not this has to do with Blackmagic being an Australian company, I'm not sure, but we're gonna get the Blackmagic Cinema Camera for a cool $2830 :)

Well I went ahead and put a pre-order in. At this point it seemed stupid not too, as I have 90 days to change my mind if necessary. I am still longing for the FS700 a bit (damn that slow-mo...), but with whispers that it might end up toward 10k price wise has scared me off. I'll keep an eye on it in case Sony surprises me. I'm still not sure what exactly I will be doing in the future as I am still green with a lot of this, but I'm confident I will be able to get it done with the BMCC. Now to figure out what to accommodate the camera with, as I have $7500 left over on my budget to purchase lenses, mounts, and anything else I'll need :)
