Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Want to figure out a lens FoV on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera compared to another camera? If you have pCAM you can enter a custom camera and do "Focal Length Match". For the custom camera setting type the active sensor size in the vertical and horizontal fields. I used a CoC of .00056 (which is for the RED ONE's 3K sensor crop) to be safe, until we get a confirmation from Blackmagic on the real CoC.

Tripod recommendation?

I'm in the market for a decent tripod for this camera. { I'm tired of the walmart, plastic pieces, NO fluid head, camera
jerks and almost falls off the head type tripods. Ive got a bunch. } What would be a good budget tripod for this camera: considering the 4lb weight + lens, and boxy ergonomics? I do mostly one man , run and gun features.

thanks

Parallel in importance with great audio is great equipment support.
I have this Miller DS10 Solo (alu)which is in the $1,000 price range and I love it (I also sandbag it when I can). If you plan on a heavier rig, you ought to plan on spending $1,200 up. I also have a an Amazing Sachtler for heavier loads and slower set up but you can really nail what you want from the current Manfrotto line. I like the spreader-less 'sticks' on the DS10 for when I have uneven terrain,Stairs and other obstructions and it's tops for outdoors adventure shoots and fast /light(er) set ups
Tips:
- Don't cheat yourself with carbon sticks, when you'll have to sandbag them anyway
- The head matters A LOT. True fluid heads cost thousands (think Cartoni) alone. Most of what pass for fluid are really lubricated friction bearings, which are fine if you are not doing whip pans. About 2/3-3/4 the cost of a good video support is the head.

I tweeted @ BMD asking for a M4/3 mount....I'm assuming they will get tons of request for it. I REALLY hope it happens, so I can easily use my Lomo's (since only half of them will fit in the Canon mount!).

I believe this page answers the question about whether it comes with an SSD. It doesn't. That leads into the next discussion: which SSD, what size, where to buy, best bang for the buck etc. Also any word on size limitations of the SSD?

thanks man, great tips.

Yeah, Manfrotto was what was poppin in my head. I bought there steadicam {sp? } small rig, which I havent been able
to do much with { doesnt seem to balance or something} , but I think thats the mindset. Unless theres some chinese import company thats nailed it for that price range. thanks

You kind of get what you pay for with Tripods.

Remember, you will probably upgrade Cameras a couple of times before you up grade Tripods - it's kind of a longer term investment.

Neil.

Both the 501 and 701 are junk, as well as not being true fluid heads. Save your money till you can afford a used Vinten or something.

Also, I keep thinking it but forget when asking something else. Would the scopes program work on an 11" macbook air? That would be a nice portable solution to keep near the camera, you'll need something to transfer the ssd's to bigger drives anyway, unless you budget for keeping the drives for a while in your workflow. As prices fall I could see original drives become like master tapes, or neg, on projects with a budget. Even raw is a fraction of the price of film, if you budgeted not to re-use drives.

Also, I am thinking external waveform monitoring will eventually be done via an iPad or another tablet app soon too.

I haven't used the 504, but I have heard it is much improved over the others. It is also not a true fluid head, but you won't really find many new tripods under $2000.00 that are.

Agreed.

I'd like to see the equivalent of 30mm on an ~S35 and 50mm on an ~S35 myself, those are the two I'd be using most

(So with the FS100, that's a 1.5 crop compared to 2.3 of the BM, so the conversion in lens from the FS100 to BM to retain width would be x by 0.652)

FS100 (1.5)
BM (2.3)
5D (1)

30mm
20mm (19.56)
45mm

50mm
32mm (32.61)
75mm

So basically, I'd like to see around 20mm and 32mm with some hand held action. :)

Where do you see 20 on the 5D?? This is correct.

I respectfully admit I was confused. Your table shows comparable focal length lenses at the same POV?

I was just thinking in terms of 20mm on ff35mm BECOMES 30mm on FS100 and BECOMES 45mm on BM

One Lens different FOV's.

The smaller sensors capture a correspondingly smaller area of the core of the image.
This chart....

Haha, it happens! :) When I was making the chart I checked it over and over and over again to make sure I had it right.

Whoo! hoo! Just placed a pre-order! I am pre-order #1 with authorized dealer Safe Harbor! Price is $2845 and they don't charge your card until it ships! Ask for Jeff Pulera at 1-800-544-6599 :) hurry before the list gets long!

I use the 501 and I like it. Is it perfect? No, but it's a lot better than many others in the price range. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat as well.

Intriguing wording here:

Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD. All compressed recording in 1920x1080 10-bit YUV with choice of Film or Video Dynamic Range.

So it looks like 2845 is definitely street price. Very nice.
