Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Also planned with a double tap of the screen.

I know people will ***** about touch controls (hell, I always turn them off on my GH2), but I really like what BM is doing here, and this camera is in no way intended to be an event cam, where tactical touch is really crucial, so I'm really fascinated by the approach. I think it's a good thing.

Plus, I have manual aperture lenses, which means that I don't have to touch a screen to change that. I'm itching to try this badboy out.

@John Brawley,

Do you know how weatherproof this camera is or will be? Thank you again for taking time to share your insights with us.

There's so much goodness in this camera's image - 12bit, the latitude, high data rate. It really does feel like being a kid in a candy store.

I'd only balance by saying that the model had a 1.2 HMI on her (diffused)...that's a whole lotta light to balance the window.

a 1.2HMI isn't a whole lotta light where I come from ;-) it was also going through a window and two frames of diffusion. It was just to give her more shape, rather than lighting up the space.

I have no idea. It is made from a single piece of aluminium. I guess you could do a rubber seal around the SSD card door. Then it would be the lens mount....

I thought the ultra shallow dof in sherlock was to emphasise his isolation and near autistic thinking when solving crime.
a great use of dof..... I mainly use it to tidy up interviews shot with just 30 seconds to set up. Hides my inadequacies. Lol

Sorry must stay on subject

Funny.

I do still have some working hand-held light meters, but I didn't see anything in the release literature about in-camera exposure measurement (beyond tethering via thunderbolt and using Ultrascope). I've seen a couple references to zebras in this thread, so I am assuming it is measuring light and displaying something about it. Is there an in camera wfm display or something other than zebras?

Yes there are plans for more option on exposure tools.

@John, hopefully without sounding like an impatient dick, any ETA on the additional footage that I and some others listed off for you when you requested what we'd like to see? Just curious (and anxious of course). :)

Also, any word on the SATA version (SATAII/3gb or SATAIII/6gb)?

Finally, I know you've mentioned some things that are "not yet finalized"... such as ISO, lack of audio implementation, sensor rating, etc... are there any other significant aspects you can think of off the top of your head that also have yet to be finalized?

As always, thanks for your tremendous efforts.

You know BM had a lot of time to wait for convergent tech to be there to build this camera. But that does not excuse Red from failing to create the "affordable" Red Scarelet. The BMCC is being announced just few months later than the Scarlet X.

If my logic is sound, then RED Digital should be the perfect company to release a response to the BMCC that will meet and exceed it right? I do not see any patentable innovations other that the direct recording to a built-in SSD. So if you catch my drift (Hello RED! R U Listening?) ANYONE can up the ante on this BMCC.

Like I said, I still have to wad through the patent filings to see exactly if and what BlackMagic is claiming in the way of innovations. That would restrict any competitors. Course if BlackMagic is reading this post, they should probably be building the improvements into the final release or lining them up shortly thereafter.
-Choice of mounts
-Higher speed options
-Removeable or at least replaceable battery
-I'm working on a follow focus if this thing has a lanc connection or can be controlled wirelessly.

I'll see if I can shoot some more on the weekend. I'm grading a film though and flying interstate so that's more like wishful thinking right now.

Right now, all the software side of the camera is still very early days...

And I'm sure they will!

...in 2015.

I have to agree with ripupthehwry, the footage I seen so far is like really bad dslr footage, in fact, I haven't seen any dslr look like that. The only thing that keeps me afloat on this camera is the specs, but its also beyond me why would anyone even pre order this cam out of those clips... people are so willing to spend $3000...

Also, how will that camera work in a professional environment? It looks like a one man camera, because, I can't see any DP lighting from that monitor alone, and if you need to carry your laptop around with you, to use this camera, it's just nonsense...

Don't get me wrong, I love the specs, but the footage, its at best mundane. I have to wait and see what else can be done with it.

It does have a HD-SDI output and Thunderbolt if that's what you need for monitoring.

Coming....

(geeze you guys...complain about wide shots then complain it's too close !)

Haha vlad meant he wanted to see more of the stills I posted as examples for coloring log. He's been pretty happy about the footage since day one.

Thrrad is getting confusing!

Well. I like non-haptic touch controls (GUI) for some functionality but not for certain controls. Haptic (SUI) is key when you are following action, controlling moves, controlling iris/zoom etc. It informs the operator that the intended action is in progress or has occurred. That's why the START/STOP button is haptic on this camera.
I would not be surprised if a swing/tilt screen wasn't part of the evolution moving forward. That's the one big user innovation in digicams.

John, this looks SO good. I was excited before... now sort of panicked... Can you make the vimeo file you uploaded downloadable? Also, can you post a couple of 2.5k stills? Thanks in advance, and OH LUCKY MAN to have this thing in hand now. It seems to be all I was hoping imagewise.

I wish that I could but I'm not able to yet. Still early days. People get the wrong idea.

Isn't it a bit on the dark side?

And what about ghosting?

GHOSTING

DARKSIDE

BLACK MAGIC

Sigh.

Pre-order soon it may be limited to a run of only 666

Or maybe you want to EXORCISE some caution.

Etc.

How could you now Shoot a Horror Film on anything else?

Sorry, it's been a long read.

Pre-ordered and happy,

Neil.

Expect to see more of this and worse when the first tests start rolling out. John admitted that an actual colorist would be able to do much better. When people start trying to correct to Dell monitors or worse, oh boy. You can already see it happening anyway...

Those colorist classes are gonna make a lot of moneez. Gonna be a lot of custom lut upload and downloads flying around to save eyeballs, though.

I'm the first to admit that I'm no colourist and I'm using a camera that has changing curves in a complicated application that I've never used before...(resolve)

I haven't seen the NEW version of Resolve that goes with this camera, but apparently it's much easier to drive.
