Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Note that a 2.5k Bayer array can at best resolve 2k of detail before extinction (with a black & white resolution chart (chroma is lower resolution)).

RED 4K can do at best 3.2k before extinction (about 2.4k before first artifacts): http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/awilt/story/more_red_res_testing_the_mysteryium_resolved/P1/

Thus, 4k/3.2k = 1.25. If BMD has an ultra-high quality de-Bayer algorithm (perhaps better than VNG (Variable Number of Gradients)), which can take a bit of time to process (though if can be implemented on a GPU (BMD is strong here (Resolve)), can be fast), then 2.5k/1.25 = 2k, which would be perfect for 1920x1080. Would be great if BMD published a horizontal lines (resolution) spec (C300 and FS100 are rated at 1000+ lines (horizontal resolution)). 3840 using SuperPixel de-Bayering is best for HD (and also very fast), however 2.5k VNG or similar isn't a bad bang-for-the-buck. A resolution chart will give us a better idea for real-world performance.

Clean, high DR 2k would be great for HD. However there won't be any extra resolution to allow cropping in post without loss of detail. In order to be honest, manufacturers should state what the actual resolution performance is after de-Bayering, as tested with a resolution chart (that we can test and reproduce).

This camera looks awesome. But at the rate BMD has been going with making their other products better while at the same time cheaper, by next year (or sooner), I bet we will see the next revision to this bad boy. I think it will be 4k RAW, s35 sensor, articulating touch screen, high ISO, high framerates, higher DR, PL mount option, and all that without a price increase or a very small one if so.

Then a year later they will introduce another one with a 4k capable real time DaVinci resolve built in. Just plug it into a monitor and grade in-camera via remote ipad app. It will also include a built in beer cooler and a sofa for your clients. Price: $50

Go Blackmagic!!!!
at 2845 a year is plenty of time to recoup and recycle. =D

I can't believe the street price is actually lower. Craziness. Also, someone at the show needs to go hammer down the point of a RGB histogram on that LCD in realtime while shooting raw

I
repeatedly asked when I put the amount up if it was going to change. Both guys said its 2999msrp and their price is 2845. Maybe because I don't get a free thunderbolt cable?
lol

It's on my list !

They did ZEBRAs first cause that was easier for NAB.

I would expect aliasing to be at a minimum and moire to be virtually gone on this camera. Being able to shoot the native res of the chip really helps a lot and assuming they are using a decent optical filter should solve aliasing for the most part. DSLRs will always be plagued by these problems due to the nature of the higher resolution sensors. This camera doesn't have to do any funky stuff to get a clean raw image. So I would expect the artifacts to be massively better then DSLRs. We will have to see how they compare to well engineered video camera sensors.

Red is an interesting beast. I always find our footage to be softer then what I would have expected for even a bayer sensor. Raw photo stills at similar resolutions don't look as soft as Red footage for example. Of course it looks great but I don't consider the detail loss of Red as a benchmark for what happens with a bayer sensor. We will have to see what direction BM takes to find that balance between aliasing and too much filtering.

I fully expect that Blackmagic Design is already thinking S35 4K. CMOSIS CMV12000: 12 MP (4K x 3K), global shutter, 12 bits at up to 180 fps, and DR up to 90 dB (about 15 stops) in HDR mode. Real-time CineForm RAW: only about 40-50 MBps (less than half the data rate of the BMD 2.5K cam using CinemaDNG). The rest of the camera could be pretty much the same as the 2.5K cam. ProRes 4K, and by then maybe even DNxHD 4K (or would it be DNx4K?). .

Stop saying that, I´m wetting my pants

I finally got onto the BMD site - it must have got more hits than Vincent Laforet's 5DII test! So: 2K raw and they throw in DaVinci Resolve for $3K - just bring your own SSD. There's no other word for it - the potential of this disruptive camera is exciting! Every time I click the refresh on this thread there's another page - it's really captured the imagination. I haven't felt like this since the Drama was ongoing. It will impact potential buyers of the Digital Bolex and perhaps the Apertus open camera project. There's room for everyone, but following this camera, only if the price is right. Black Magic just set their price for them if they want to remain relevant in this sector of this market! The only thing to debate seems to be the sensor size. I bought a Gh1 when they first came out, but the MFT sensor size began to irk me a bit so later I went with Canon, but even I will probably buy one of these cameras (does it actually have a name?) if there are any left.

BMD is like the IKEA to our camera world - design price first - and then give us basically every thing we want on top of it!

Actually when I think about, we paid 2500 for our couch. And now we have a RAW camera and grading system for a little bit more.

They really did it.
Bad analogy. Ikea is great looking crap.

Wow, just... wow. I am now finished reading every post in this thread.

THIS IS EPIC. A $3000 true cinema camera. RAW Cinema DNG, ProRes and DNxHD recording to SSD. I'm amazed. It seems like the perfect camera... almost.

First up, what the heck is this?

Guys....

You're reading a lot into images which are made by a very early camera.

The camera currently has a similar black spot issue with extreme brightness objects like the sun...just like early RED.

They know about it and are onto it. I think this i saw this happening in resolve when I was grading.....caused by what Iw as doing in the grade more or less....

For reference, when did you shoot this stuff John?

I actually pass through your blog every so often since your Alexa tests and the project you me filmed you were on recently seems to be the same one when you had the camera. That's a few months ago?

Hmmm, If thats the case...I will likely wait for all those issues to be corrected. Thanks
