Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Wow, it weights 1.7kg without lens! Heavy piece of gear and I like it - comparing it to its just-announced 'competitors':
Blackmagic Cinema Camera - $1760 / kg
Canon 1DC - $12500 / kg*
Sony FS700 - $8000 / kg*

* estimates :)

I'll give a general reply to those that feel that the increased DOF isn't a problem. I know what you mean, DOF is not like image resolution, bit depth, RAW, DR and so on. All these things can always be better or worse, regardless of your use of the camera, and better will always be welcomed. On the other hand, DOF is an aesthetic choice, so more or less DOF alone does not determine better or worse because that depends on your particular use of the camera.

Consider productions that could have afforded expensive video cameras but chose a 5D or 7D instead. They believed big sensor aesthetics were more important, which is something I believe as well.

Remember we are talking about a CINEMA camera, not a video camera. Let's put aside the question "do you really need a big sensor to be able to tell your story?" and watch some contemporary movies. You'll see a clear aesthetic tendency that can't be achieved with a small sensor.

If you think about it and end up convinced that your CINEMA camera does not need shallow DOF, you still need to think about crop factor and low light performance.

Small sensor size shouldn't be overlooked..

True, small sensor size shouldn't be overlooked - not that I consider a slightly smaller m43 to be really small - but it also shouldn't be an excuse not to make great cinema. Again, I point to The Hurt locker, Black Swan, and The Wrestler as examples of what can be done with S-16 film.
But if you desire S-35 sized images and all the goodness that goes along with it, there's nothing wrong with that. I've become spoiled by my FS100's DoF and low light ability. I love it. But for $3,000, this is the compromise BMD made for their first camera.

I have no doubt the BMD CC will be a great success. I can only believe it will be followed up by an even more impressive camera, maybe with an S-35 sensor. More expensive, sure, but some will consider it money well spent.

So, have patience, young padawan. The Empire built more than one Death Star.

I can't think of the last time I've seen the show stolen like how BMD has done at NAB. I mean this is bigger than Janet Jackson's nipple. This is up there with a black President and I'm a black man! Simply incredible.

The vast, vast majority of theatrically released films has been shot in a "cropped" format much smaller than the D800's and 5Dmk3's full frame: Super 35mm is equivalent to around 1.5x crop or so (I'm not sure of the exact number, but it's only very slightly larger than APS-C format, which is 1.6x). So that vast majority of movies you watch at the cinema is shot in a format that's "not as filmic" as a D800 or 5Dmk3.
1.62x

Yes, if this never existed. If anything, this camera will do wonders when it comes to competition. How can Sony, Canon, Panasonic, etc let them get away with cornering this part of the market with such specs - they must fight back, and they more than likely will (after BMD has sold tons of these!!).
The big companies don't care. They really didn't care about Red and only now (4 years later) are trotting out 4K cameras -- well, with the exception of Panasonic, who only showed a balsa-cam and mentioned releasing the real one sometime in 2013. I fully expect that Blackmagic Design is already thinking S35 4K. CMOSIS CMV12000: 12 MP (4K x 3K), global shutter, 12 bits at up to 180 fps, and DR up to 90 dB (about 15 stops) in HDR mode. Real-time CineForm RAW: only about 40-50 MBps (less than half the data rate of the BMD 2.5K cam using CinemaDNG). The rest of the camera could be pretty much the same as the 2.5K cam. ProRes 4K, and by then maybe even DNxHD 4K (or would it be DNx4K?). Yeah, I could see it happening, if Go Pro and BMD decided to collaborate. All for significantly less than the big companies want to charge.

Quote of the thread :-)

BMD is like the IKEA to our camera world - design price first - and then give us basically every thing we want on top of it!

Actually when I think about, we paid 2500 for our couch. And now we have a RAW camera and grading system for a little bit more.

They really did it.

Overall, WOW.

My mine issue/concern. I really do not understand the internal battery. Why? It seems so limited. Couldn't they find and standard battery (even from Sony or Canon) to power the camera? Only 90 minutes of record time, I guess I will have to get 2 to cover a wedding. :)

Whetr did you preorder?
Kholi, I just saw this post in another forum that you may find useful:

In all our years as a camera sales and rental shop, we've never seen such demand for a camera overnight.

We were already getting requests for purchase for this camera yesterday when it was first announced.

And since there are so many Blackmagic resellers in the country, to think that we were only seeing a small portion of the requests boggles my mind.

That said - I need to throw in the obligatory plug for us and say we are taking per-orders for the camera, so drop by our website or give us a call for details and your place in line. We do happen to be one of the leading Blackmagic dealers and I assure you we will be stocking plenty of inventory on this piece!

post-camgasm refractory period
LOL

Now that I think about it, I'll just keep the gh2 for slow mo. Lol
2nd one :D You're a funny guy, Kholi : ) What about Anthony? Since that 4K DSLR price release, never heard from him again ;) Michael is also much quiet about this BMD 12-bits RAW cam... OK, one is @NAB these days I guess, but Australia is too far or is Squig coming finally to the desert of Arizona for his shooting with an obsolete device? : D
