Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

OK this image sorta stinks...had problems with infinity focus on my AF100 and the Canon Tokina 11-16, but it gives you an idea of how wide 11mm might look on this thing. 11mm was pretty wide on the AF100 so I think that's good enough for me. I could easily see myself using the Tokina, and a 24/28, 35, & 50mm Nikkors on this thing as my whole set without really using much more on most things.

One interesting thing I read in the blog post I think, is that the white balance point is baked in. I see that as a minus.

I always white balance for video, but When I shoot raw stills, sometimes the white balance is the only thing I adjust. It is a nice way to give an image a totally different feel.

Unless I am misunderstanding?

I think his wording might just be confusing. RAW means white balance is completely flexible. I think he's just saying the original "look" is the white balance you set in camera. Which is right.

Looks great but can't help feeling they missed a trick - why EF/ZF and no universal short flange distance mount. With that sensor size it would open up access to all that S16 and c mount glass. Much easier to find a fast wide lens in S16 than 35mm.

cheers
paul

yeah, right on. If you could use S16 glass with this guy, that would make a huge difference

People at NAB are tweeting it has a PL mount (as far as what I've heard), so things might change. Wait and see.

The sensor is too large for S16 glass. Anything over 13mm wide is going to vignette heavily with the existing glass out there with the larger image circles. The 15mm width is totally out of the question. (And I say this as someone who shoots 3K with S16 glass on his Epic, and knows exactly where those image circles are...)

Just been playing around with the screen grabs from that blog. Even the JPGs hold up nicely when being pushed around... and adding a little sharpening shows the resolution is there... Looks fantastic. The RAW files should be amazing!

I hope these guys have the manufacturing sides of things worked out... This is going to sell in the 10s of 1000s.

Who thought the RED Scarlet would turn out to be so black... Magic!

I think the fact they were able to pull this thing together should make us all very excited about what they COULD put up beyond this little camera. Obviously they have the chops to do it, so I'm just as excited about what could be.

Yeah you're right. The only glass you could use are the 25+ focal lengths. Oh well.

That's not a bad thing, though. Just means that it's time for some super fast wide lenses to show up on the market. Or, when the PL mount comes... time for some 10mm ULTRA PRIME! :D

For you PC users...no need to fret about formatting the Drive with Mac OS format. MacDrive can do that for you. Just FYI...it's not a deal breaker.

What makes this exciting for me is not just this camera, but considering what Digital Bolex is trying to do as well as other companies, it appears that we are coming to a point where the technology is available that all these really cool digital cinema cameras will be coming from all corners.

We won't have to depend on the big three, who may or may not want to serve the market and price point of the average DVXUSER microbudget film maker - at least not the way we want to be served.

I just KNEW this could be done: I've been contacting some people about designing our own APS-C RAW camera; I've got the codec working, but the driver and hardware may never get to exist, the window of opportunity was severely narrowed by BMD!

Cute camera at a nice price point. I do like BM products including my hyperdrive.

So while everyone is cleaning-up the mess they have made in their trousers, a few points:

1: everyone has been whining like sick puppies here for the past two years about the disadvantages of 43 sensor size in terms of DOF. This sensor is smaller.

2: 1/4" audio in? This is not, nor will it ever be, a "professional" audio interface.

3: tack-on $1K for a zacuto z-finder or similar (but I don't see an hdmi port in the specs). Maybe someone will come up with a chimney style magnifier and the existing screen has a fine enough pitch to do double duty.

4: No one has really seen the material of this camera head-to-head with anything else. The claimed 13 stops is mouth-watering at this price point (it helps that most of the footage I have seen posted was shot in overcast conditions). Everyone should know by now that there is a whole raft of issues that need to be considered, stuff like aliasing, skew, color clipping etc. and it remains to be seen what is really under-the-hood so to say.

. . .But at this price point most people can afford to pick one up and be their own crash-test-dummies. The sensor size is going to put a lot of pressure on things like 35mm F1.4 nikkors, I'm glad I've recently moved to all Nikon f mount and have an 11-16 tokina.
