Blacking tapes

What is the general sense about this? In film school, every DV instructor always mandated tape-blacking to avoid time-code errors. However, we're shooting a feature that will use at least 40-50 tapes. This seems like quite a bundle to me, and I don't want to overuse the heads. What are people's thoughts on this?
Thanks!

Re: Blacking tapes

I think most of us don't do it. I've never had a timecode break unless I was doing something stupid.

Re: Blacking tapes

there's no point in adding an extra pass on a mini-dv tape if you are using it for raw footage and give yourself plenty of head and tail room. But more importantly, how long is the final cut going to be that you need to shoot 40-50 tapes?

Re: Blacking tapes

Blacking seems like overkill, but I *always* bound my tapes before shooting, which is to say I fast forward the tape to the end and rewind it.

Bounding tapes is a carryover of good audio cassette practice and since I've been bounding DV tapes I haven't had any time-code breaks.
