Black wrap

Im after a cheap and easily accessible alternative to black wrap to wrap around my lights to minimize spill when using CT Gels.

Any suggestions would be great!

cheers.

Somethings that I try are pieces of foam core with flat black on one side, just don't get them to close to the lights. Other then that I am not sure what would be cheaper then black wrap. Flags and C-Stands can really get up there in price. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

yeah i was curious as how it would affect the temperature... im sure if you just cover it for the actual take and then let the light breathe afterwards you should be fine... i was looking at Cine foil but i havent managed to find anywhere that stocks in the the UK so i am hunting for an alternative....

After you've bought expendables of various kinds needed for different client jobs I find you wind up with enough unused leftovers to fill a small warehouse. Blackwrap, duvtyne, rolls and sheets of gels in different grades of nd, ctb, cto etc. Black gaffers tape, white gaffers tape, marking tapes, double sided tape, silks, and on and on and on...

Sometimes my place looks like a promotion for filmtools.

I swear PAs and grips put other people's expendables in my grip bag every set I go to. over a few years I have ended up with about 10 rolls of gaffer tape I cant explain.

By the time you get that done you have spent more then cinefoil/blackrap. Just drop 22 bucks and do it right.

Actually, you can get flat black high heat paint (I use it on my wood stove where it rusts) for about $4. I believe a box of foil is about $2. So for $6 you've got black wrap.

The problem is not the $23 for a roll of gam blackwrap, it's the $10-$15 places will charge you to ship it!

The store i work at sells flat black heat spray paint for 7 50 so i dont know what kind you are talking about. And you are going to need 3-4 cans to get 50 ft. Not to mention you have to do it on both sides or it will defeat the purpose. Also how much time does this take? 2 hours to figure out how to get the whole roll out and held down 30 minutes to paint 8-10 hours to dry (will still flake off non stop) and then you have to do it over on the other side.

Yeah, buy a small roll of black wrap and reuse it. If you're worried about shipping, find a place that sells it nearby. There's gotta be somewhere...

this is the kind of expendable that shouldn't be DIYed for common sense reasons and important medical/fire dangers. You have to trust this stuff not to fumigate or burn.

I would also be concerned about the paint flaking off the aluminum with lots of movement and "crinkling" of the aluminum.

I've never overheated lights with blackwrap. Make the investment and you can use the same roll for 23 projects.

I once melted the side-knob of a 1kW Paglight open face. I had it totally wrapped in black wrap because the fixture had an insane spill on all sides and I needed total darkness except for one small strip of light from the front.
After 30 minutes or so, the knob suddenly fell off, totally molten...

...the blackwrap was still good though! :D
