Black Hawk Down & Saving Private Ryan

I don't really like Robert Rodriquez. He last Mariachi movie (once upon a time... sucked eggs). That movie was so bad I almost puked.

Okay I'm exaggerating, but it was so bad, and his cooking on the bonus features (dvd) was stupid.

Yeah, I agree. I respect him more for how he does things than what he does. El Mariachi and From Dusk till Dawn are the only films of his I think are any good. Sin City was fun, and visually interesting, but without the visuals would have been quite boring. I should really watch Spy Kids the whole way through.

SPR was revolutionary because it was the first mainstream hit to really depict combat in all its horrific gory glory(TM). It's the most honest display of what war is like (well, that I'll ever know).

When the bullets are flying, the music never swells, no slow motion (even the "shell shock" effect isnt slow), no Woo-tastic stunts, half the time the guns are too loud to even make out the dialog.

Just for fun I watched the end battle yesterday, and it rings so true that even someone who help but notice where the camera is or where the back light is coming from, like me, becomes completely immersed. When it was all said and done I realized I wasn't "paying attention" and was goin to start it again before i realized just what that meant and how effective the film is.

When I watch BHD, for better or for worse, I'm always aware it's a movie, where the camera is and where that backlight is hiding. :)

John, check out Tigerland if you haven't seen it. It isn't really a "war" film, as they never get to Vietnam. It was shot on S16 I believe and is very documentary-like.

Schumacher and Colin Farrell at their bests IMO.

I'll let you know when I get the script done. Don't hold your breath; it is one of those back-burner projects... you know, the ones that take years!

Yes yes

I have Tigerland (DVD). Great film; raw gritty love it. I love S16; also I have a back burner project I've been sitting on for about a hundred years. :undecided

I like RR more for his enthusiasm and support of indie filmmkaing than the films he actually makes; I did like SIN CITY; it was sexy, it was stylistic and Ic an appreciate it. I thought ONCE UPON A TIME was his best film yet but still not OMG owning material. I find his SF on the DVD's usually to be the highlights; even the cooking (I love Mexican food).

I loved FROM DUSK TILL DAWN but how much of that is really Tarantino (Screenplay) and Clooney (Delivery)?

Some people seem to think RR is a god; but I havent seeen anything from him I'd put in my TOP 100.

Question:

Someone stated that SPR was revolutionary, how? What about it was so radical that it turned filmmaking on its head or war films or cinematography upside down?

Have you been under a rock? SPR (as mentioned above) literally put the stamp on 'HOW TO FILM COMBAT ACTION films. No film prior to that immmersed you into the fray like this film did. THe filmmkaers took the 'Lets pretend we are documentary filmmakers' approach.

That cinema verite appraoch to filming not only combat but action scenes in general has tricled all the way down to the tv level.

That real high shutter speed (staccato)? SPR is probaly the most famous film to employ that technique first; followed by BHD, 28 Days Later, etc etc
