Howdy,

This is my first post ever here... but I thought it'd be fun to share, even though it is basically a copy of our press release for the feature, "Black Dahlia", which is being filmed on both Panasonic's AJ-HDC27 VariCam and Panasonic's AG-DVX100A. The info on our movie is below... the film is still in-production (listed in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety), but about 50% completed. A trailer and various scenes/teasers have already been cut from the film.

Check it out:

"BLACK DAHLIA" is bubbling up from under the radar, and preparing for an imminent unleashing. A spiritual thriller with spine-tingling layers that unravel like a dream.

For those of you who have been following "Black Dahlia", (the film starring Kristen Kerr, Lizzy Strain, Karen Black, Cinque Lee, Julie Strain, Trent Haaga, Caveh Zahedi, Dame Darcy, Giuseppe Andrews, Masuimi Max, Sarah M. Scott, Mark Borchardt, Stephen Polk, David J, Lloyd Kaufman, Gidget Gein, Will Keenan, Glenda Cole, Paul Bunnell, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Ego Plum, Lenora Claire, Miss Satanica, and underground art legend, Robert Williams, to name only a few.  The Original Score is composed by David J (of Love & Rockets, Bauhaus fame) and orchestrated by Ego Plum and The Ebola Music Orchestra.) ) the film has already developed a large cult following, which is only growing by the minute.

Lensed in both HD and SD utilizing Panasonic's cutting-edge 24p HD (and SD) technology, and mixing in 35mm film and Super 8mm film footage, "Black Dahlia", is a truly remarkable post-modern noir, not only due its story and cast, but also because of the merging of film and high-end video acquisition technologies. Edited on Final Cut Pro HD, with offline color correction done via Red Giant's Magic Bullet, and online color correction performed with da Vinci Spirit Datacine and the da Vinci 2K color corrector. Both audio sound design and mix (including soundtrack) are being recorded and engineered with Pro-Tools.

1) Perhaps one of the only films ever to win an award at a festival before the film is even complete and/or released. "Black Dahlia" won "Best Original Score" at the 2004 Creepfest Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA.

Composer, David J (http://www.davidjonline.com , of Love & Rockets, Bauhaus fame), won the award. The awards listing is online at http://www.creepfest.com/fangclub.html

Sound deisgner and engineer, John Neff ("Mulholland Drive") and orchestrator/songwriter, Ego Plum ( http://www.egoplum.com ) are also responsible for winning this award, as they are among the collaborators that are working with David J on the film's musical score. John Neff engineered and mixed the track, which was recorded in a famous director's music studio (top secret)...

(Nora Keyes, who sings the award-winning title theme, has a new album out, more info on Nora's newest musical creations at http://www.dualplover.com/product/nora/nora.html )

Speaking of Nora Keyes ( http://www.norakeyes.com ), Nora just headlined a large live concert show in Australia this past Friday (January 14, 2005) at THE ZOO, 711 Brisbane St., The Valley, Brisbane Qld, Australia.

3) Also, for a great page describing our film, please see what Pretty/Scary put up on their site about "Black Dahlia"... It's wonderful, especially since Pretty/Scary is a website dedicated to women (especially in regards to the horror and thriller genres), created by women for women. It's an honor. Here's is their press on the film:
http://www.pretty-scary.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=134

4) Last but not least, the BBC UK ( http://www.bbc.co.uk ) will FINALLY be airing the 40 minute prime time program/spotlight documentary on The Black Dahlia Murder Case in February 2005. Ramzi Abed's "Black Dahlia" is showcased on the program, with behind the scenes footage from the film's set, as well as interviews with the director, composer, and key talent. The show will also be featuring interviews with authors, John Gilmore ("Severed") and Steve Hodel ("Black Dahlia Avenger"), about the case. It is going to be great press for the film, and good to be in the company of well-known figures in the Dahlia's mythology.

Again, thanks...

And stay tuned for more.

A great book, but I though David Fincher had the rights to shoot this one? Hate to see a b-movie version with Karen Black and Julie Strain instead of some big league actors.

"A great book, but I though David Fincher had the rights to shoot this one? Hate to see a b-movie version with Karen Black and Julie Strain instead of some big league actors."

Kind of an idiotic thing to say... Ouch.

Re: Black Dahlia, HD/SD 24p (Varicam/DVX)

It has nothing to do with James Ellroy, and it's not a B-movie... now, it does have some cultish actors in it, but it's a very serious film.

Our film is "BLACK DAHLIA", the De Palma film is called "The Black Dahlia".

Elizabeth Short was a real person... The Black Dahlia was her nickname... Our film is based on the murder case and real life, the De Palma film is about two cops and the Dahlia case is simply background to their story.

A lot of this (that is the real case, Ms. Short's nickname, et al) is public domain.

Btw, we just filmed this past weekend on January 15th at the location where her body was found on January 15th 1947. So it was a very spooky and magical day.

Oh, and another thing... Fincher WAS attached to the Ellroy picture, but now it's De Palma... That movie keeps getting pushed back... so who knows when they'll start.

*As for Mark Borchardt, Mark is a very close friend, and he acted in my film "The Tunnel". Mark will be showing up in Dahlia, as well.

Best Wishes and Clean Dishes,

R

Re: Black Dahlia, HD/SD 24p (Varicam/DVX)

Karen was pretty decent in "The Day Of The Locust" and "Five Easy Pieces", and Julie's part is fairly small... Julie basically plays herself, but her performance is very subtle and natural (the first like that for her perhaps ever)... There will be a lot of surprises with the performances, but I'll leave that for people to decide when it's out.

After all, I did direct the king of wackiness, Lloyd Kaufman, in a movie where he spoke French and played a dark angel version of Monsieur Hulot (from Tati's films).

Best,

R

Re: Black Dahlia, HD/SD 24p (Varicam/DVX)

The Ellroy book/screenplay has been floating around HWood for years, I just would love to see someone like Fincher make it in deep, dark 35mm...Or hell, let Lynch take a wack at it.

De Palma, well... :-/

Re: Black Dahlia, HD/SD 24p (Varicam/DVX)

We don't have our trailer online yet, as it's only a promo for distributors. As soon as it's one that we're ready to show the public, it'll go up on our website. As it is right now even, our site is basically just a ghost site, as it's under major construction, and will look nothing like it looks right now.

As for the Ellroy novel, that's the one that Fincher WAS attached to do. Now, the person who IS directing it is Brian De Palma. Lynch was actually attached to another book on the subject entitled "Severed", which Ed Pressman had/has the rights to. Later on, Floria Sigusmondi was attached to it, but then she too dropped out... The Dahlia, in general, has been a subject that has not seen any real exploration in a narrative sense since the movie "True Confessions" (which is sort of modeled after the murder of Ms. Short) and also the made-for-tv "Who Is The Black Dahlia?"

The Ellroy film has been in development since about 1996... the Gilmore book since about 1997...

Anyhow...

Best,

R

Re: Black Dahlia, HD/SD 24p (Varicam/DVX)

Several years ago I was an editor/producer on the show Hollywood Babylon, [I rarely admit it] and worked on the “Black Dahlia” episode. As tacky as that show was, I think we did northward of a hundred shows, it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had working on a TV show.

We had access to a lot of behind the scene investigation photo’s and transcripts for the Dahlia episode. Because of the graphic nature of the shots, we could not show most of them, but that was a very eerie episode and I can remember thinking what a good movie it might make – who knew?

Apparently you did – good luck with your movie, I look forward to seeing it. ;D
