Is it normal for black horizontal bars to be dislayed on LCD and Viewfinder when viewing 24PA footage thru the DVX100? I never use camera to view tapes........always a deck! Took the camera and 24PA tapes to a friends house to capture on Vegas.......The black bars showed on the monitor screen and it refused to capture??!!?? Is there something stupid I'm not doing? Appreciate feedback!

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Did you capture in 16:9 mode? 8) If not where are the bars? 8)

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Ahh.........I don't think I tried to capture in 16x9!! But is it normal if shot in Letterbox 24PA to view it thru the camera with these horizontal bars?? Is the answer to shoot 4x3 with mask on LCD if you want to view your footage thru camera????? Thanks Elvis!

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Are you referring to the Horizontal Black Bars that mask for 16:9 or are you seeing bars that bar you from seeing period?

You can shoot 4:3 and mask in Post.

or

You can shoot Letterbox in camera whereas the DVX does the Letterbox for you.

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

When I try to play my Pana MQ63 tapes that were shot in24PA letterbox , The LCD pulses and displays the footage Letterboxed with 3 other horizontal stripes accross the screen...... each about 3/8 " thick spaced evenly apart! Sometimes a red message flashes" Unplayable tape : Other format " Is this normal??

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

..this probably has to do with the fact that the deck your using has probably always had wet lube tapes run through it, and most likely has a buildup of wet tape lube on the heads. youve probably always used the "dry" MQ tapes in your dvx, which is good, but as you probably know , you should not mix that dry lube with wet lube, or it forms a goo junk that will clogg up your heads... the interesting thing about this reaction is that its not limited to happening in the dvx, which means that if your running "dry "tapes in a deck with wet lube all over the heads, your clogging the deck heads up , and you will get things like black bars, and other forms of tape dropout, and probably messages telling you it cant read the tape. ..im just assuming this is what is going on, but it seems very likely, you need to be sure that youclean the heads of any device youl be using to run your dry tape through before you do , cause chances are they have wet lube on thoer heads... generally your not going to want to be ruining everyones heads by running the tape cleaner on them whenever you want to switch to running one of your dry tapes through it, and it would be best to have a vtr/deck that is specifically used for that purpose, and just like your dvx, only has dry tapes used in it.

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Loser, All of this viewing is happening in-camera. Does not happen when viewing on my JVC-s3u deck! However, I do get the flashing red circle in the ViewFinder and LCD occasionally when I shoot! I attributed it to living in the Sub-tropics, the camera probably doesn't like humidity! I only get occasional dropouts.......was simply going to live with the flashing circle. But perhaps I need to send it in for a good cleaning!???? Only 54 hours on camera.................flashing circle stated appearing around 12 hours! Anyone else experiencing a similar problem??

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Oh yeah.......I have used the head cleaner about every 10 days........Have used it about 8 times!!!!!

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

..oh, but i would still say the culprit is dirty heads, you can just run a cleaning tape in it for about 3-4 sec, and see if it clears it up.. otherwise i would send it in for cleaning. the humidity is probably a big factor in how much dirt and junk will stick to the heads. i have had that same excact thing happen to me before too. i didnt clean the heads, but i rewound the tape, and then played it forward again, and it was fine. i knew my heads were probably clean, since my dvx is very well taken care of. i would try doing the rewinding before any cleaning.

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

rewound and fast forwarded 3 differeent 24PA MQ tapes and tried it with some MQ tapes shot scene file 1 60 ie and am still ! getting these horizontal bars over footage with an overall blue pulsating image on my LCD but not on my deck! Could this be more of a head alignment problem? Any more input before I grudgingly send it off for cleaning/repair?

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

i would try running your own head cleaner tape for a sec. but if the unit records ok, then i would assume the heads are aligned fine, becuase they seem to play back fine in other decks.. it was an interesting problem when it occured with me, and ive only had it happen once.

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Alright ....I inserted the head cleaner and put DVX in VCR mode ,pushed play for 6 seconds and removed it ......[ I assume this is the normal procedure for head cleaning] Don't suppose you can use the head cleaner in camera mode? Can you?? I inserted yet another MQ 63 [#4 ]with 24P footage and it played perfectly! I tried playing 2 more tapes and the bars came back with #4 tape image on LCD frozen with the new tape footage barely visible playing under it! Help!!! Heh....HEH ......At least the camera seems to be shooting O.K. ....Just not being able to be used as a VCR! Thanks for your input !!!!!!!!!

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Does #4 tape keep playing perfectly? And have you been using the cleaning tape in VCR mode each time. The manual says to try and clean it up to four times no longer than 10 sec. each. 8)

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

It strikes me as odd that an image from a previous tape would be "stuck" on the heads.

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

#4 tape plays perfectly all the way thru! I tried some other tapes and occasionallyy an image from the previous tape would be some what prominent in the LCD in the frozen form of the previous black lines with the footage from the tape playing under it - the audio!!!?????? I've noticed that a star [* ] is usually present next to TC when this is happening!!!! Other than the concert footage, my last 2 tape shoot the tapes are playing randomly....sometimes perfect, sometimes total blue screen, and sometimes with the black bars or an image from the last tape superimposed over these horizontal bars!????? This is PUZZLING!!!

Re: .Black bars on 24PA DVX playback?

Well if #4 plays perfect I would think you had dirty heads when recording the others. I would move on with new tapes. And see how it goes. If not you could call a priest! ;D
