Black bars burned into the tv

Hi fellas,

My wife and I have recently bought an HD LCD for our room and since most of the broadcast is in 4:3 we see the black lateral bars whenever we're not watching hd content. The thing is, today I've notice that there is like a very very subtle shadow of the black lateral 4:3 bars when we're watching hd movies! I've read that this is more or less common in old PLASMA tvs, but this is a brand new samsung full hd LCD that has yet to complete a month of usage. A couple of questions now:
1 - Is this a permanent thing? I mean, if I keep watching 4:3 content with the black lateral bars will the bars eventually be permanently burned into the display? OR if I switch the viewing mode to 16:9 (even though it's not and it will make the image strech accross the display) will the bars eventually disappear?

thanks

Rafa

I don't think that burn-in is a phenomenon affecting LCD screens. Particularly when you consider that burn-in (on CRTs anyway) happens when a given area of the screen is energized for extended periods of time, and the black areas of your display are black because they are not being energized...

...maybe an engineer could offer you a better take.

Although there is no such thing as burn-in on LCDs. People report 'burn in' images on HDTVs and Computer screens. Try leaving it on a snowy channel for a period of time and then watch HD 16:9.

Misconception #3: LCD TVs suffer from burn-in.

Absolutely untrue. LCD monitors work by blocking light, so it is literally impossible for burn-in to occur on the screen. LCD TVs are sometimes referred to as "transmissive" displays, meaning that light isn't created by the liquid crystals themselves. Instead, a light source (bulb) behind the panel shines light through the display, which uses liquid crystals to manipulate the intensity of that light. When light is generated from a source external to the display screen itself, images cannot be permanently—or even temporarily—retained.

We have a Samsung as well, with a similar result. Forget what the other guys are saying, there is a slight line at the 4:3 screen size. Try watching it set to zoom1, you lose a bit top and bottom, but you get the full screen without the distortion.

And yes, it does go away.

Thanks, fellas. That is reassuring. We'll test it during the day only hd content just to make sure it does go away.

They want you to replace it every 2 years.
The times where a TV lasts 30 years are gone.

Now, if only the plotlines had an expiration date. And the rest.

My wife keeps looking at me funny because I say the actors' lines before they do.
