Black balancing

so lets summarize. how does one black balance?

1) close the iris?

or can i put the lens cap and that will work

No, the camera will do it for you. Just hold down the white balance button a bit longer; the camera will automatically shut the iris and do a pure black balance.

Does it really affect the picture alot? i am not sure ive ever balck balnaced my camera?

About 2 seconds, maybe 3. Some pro cameras, specifically Ikegami, actually set black level as well as color when you black balance. I'd be interested to know if the HVX did this as well.

Several year back, I was told to "white balance", then "black balance", and then "white balance" a second time - this was on state-of-the-art broadcast cameras then.

As Barry Green states, the black balance on the HVX should be done every once in a while. I'm trying to simply remember to do this at the start of each shooting day because I know I'll never remember to perform this function once in a while.

Black balancing is really a no-brainer, and I always do it before every shoot. Why? Because I do a WB anyway, and the only extra effort it takes is to hold the button a few more seconds. If you have time to do a WB (and you should), then you should do the BB as well.

Would there be a downfall to ABB every time you AWB... it is simple enough, just hold 2 seconds longer and there can't be any mistakes made on the process. I know the manual says it isn't necessary, but if it can't hurt then I would allways do it for temperature reasons and what not
