Here's some black-and-white footage I shot with the kit lens. The Dynamic Black-and White film mode is really impressive.

I'm so happy with my GH1. The ability to wander the city, shoot footage that looks as good as 35mm, and edit it together into something that tells a story, or creates a mood or feeling...is something amazing.

I started out in the '80's with a VHS camcorder and edited using two VCR's with flying erase heads(!) Shooting film was financially not feasible.

Today, the footage I shoot finally matches up with how I see it in my head. It's unbelievable.

That's really beautiful. It reminds me of Polanski's Repulsion.

I agree about how empowering the GH1 is. I have a backpack I keep with me that holds the GH1, lenses, and the zoom H4N. After dealing with the cost and time and restrictions of film and processing for so long, it's amazing that I now have the main tools I need with me to use on a whim.

Thanks for the Polanski comparison. Not exactly what I was thinking when I shot it, but I love Polanski. I'll be getting the Zoom soon. Right now I'm using my giant JVC HD250 from work as my audio recorder. That kind of defeats the idea of traveling light! I'm going to shoot something tomorrow with actual lighting. If the GH1 looks this good with available light, I can't wait to see what it looks like when I light it!

Amen to that!

You do the bestest things with the GH1, good job!

Very nice.

That shot of the van on the road at 1:11 was so "movie."

I was expecting dialogue from those in the vehicle and then cut to a through the windshield shot of the actors. :D

BTW. Does shooting B&W make it easier for the codec in 1080p?

I'm not sure if the B&W helps the codec in 1080p or not.
It seems reasonable that it might help the codec. If it only has to worry about representing things in terms of luminance values instead of hues, maybe the codec doesn't have to squeeze as much info. into the 19mbps. I'm not sure how that works. I still see some artifacting in the deep shadows just above the blacks.

I made a post several weeks ago stating that it's much better to shoot color and then do you B&W in post. Now, I'm not so sure. The way the GH1 sees the world in black-and-white is very pleasing right off the bat. And you know how it's going to look right when you shoot it.

Do you feel the Black and White setting gives you more dynamic range as opposed to shooting color and converting?

The black-and-white mode doesn't necessarily give me more dynamic range, but the "Dynamic Black-and -White" setting really seems to see the world like monochrome film. And that's different than just pulling the saturation out of a color image. So, I could shoot color and then fiddle with channels and jump through hoops to get a good black-and-white image...or I could just use the Gh1's setting and get great images right out of the gate. Another advantage is that what I see on the LCD is how it will look. It's tough for me to look at a color image and imagine how it will look in black-and-white. There may also be some advantage in not having to squeeze any color information into the 19mbps codec.
