Black and White & bitrate

Curious, will shooting in b&w (black and white) in camera yield a better picture than b&w in post? It seems not having to compress the extra color data would leave more data for grey scale. Am I wrong? I couldn't find any info on this.

It generally doesn't work that way. All it does is leave the chroma value at zero. However, this codec isn't the strongest, and it might somehow work better with B&H. But it's not a bitrate question, that would be a codec quirk.
