Bizzare tape ribbon messup (pic)

So my DVX got Auto Cylinder Lock, so I shut everything off, unplugged everything and let it sit for a bit, but then when I removed the tape, look at the ribon:

I've never seen a candy cane swirl like this. How is that even possible? Are there any solutions?

it must be wound twisted somewhere. carefully rewind it all the way by hand and then fast forward it to find the other twisted spot.
