Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Hi Mark,

If you like to buy a dvd of BitterSweet, I can set it up on the website with a PayPal link. I've already done that before with another project (ZZZAP). We have two kind of dvd's: a NTSC film-only dvd and a PAL dvd with the film and loads of extra material (deleted scenes, pictures, making of documentary in Dutch, clips of our journey to the USA, etc.). And what kind of disk: dvd-r or dvd+r? Let me know what you'd like. The costprice is $ 8 including international shipment.

The weblink for ordering BitterSweet has been created on www.orphic.nl/odm. Go to Videoprojects > BitterSweet > Buy DVD and you will find the ordering options (PAL or NTSC, dvd-r or dvd+r).

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

I really liked it, very well executed and a touching story. It's hard to empathize or sympathize with a character so strongly in such a short movie but you managed to pull it off very well.

For the most part I really liked the shots you got, very creative. Some of your framing choices seemed a little odd to me...mainly when the old man was moving his head in CUs, the camera didn't follow and that threw the balance off for me.

However, these are trivial things and didn't distract from the story, which is the whole point.

Congrats...

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Hello Disjecta, you are the first person who says what I am thinking myself when I watch BitterSweet. I've got that "CUs issue" on 2 points: when the man parks his bike and when the man looks up when his wife is going to sit next to him on the beach. With both parts I already tried to edit it different but hadn't enough material to make it flow right.

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

just some technical things that annoyed me....like alot of shots the headroom was cut off...and u crossed the line a few times. or u take to long after clearing a frame to cut or dont clear it when u do cut. and the sequence at the end where the older gentlemen clutches his heart...that should have been jump cuts not dissolves. some of the dissolves in the intro didnt fully resolve until you went into the next one. perhaps when you transition to the afterlife, you could go with say, some softfocus filter and a little glow instead of the green...it didnt flow with the rest of the production design scheme colors (which was good, i liked that aspect btw).

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Hi Isrealhoudinii,
Interesting reading your comments. Some of them are right, some of them are a matter of creative taste and some of them refer to traditional viewpoints. The dissolves with the man falling down have been done on purpose: I wanted to have it like that, like a dreamstate in which he floats between live and death, like the world is spinning around him, losing steady ground. Some of the dissolves in the beginning suffer from the QT compression, but you are right: they are not really perfect - they go too fast as I didn't had long enough takes that I could mix. The color in the afterlife scenes have been done like this on purpose, the pro-mist like effect had have been too much of a standard solution and I wanted to compensate the grey background of the air, to make if more warmer of color. I do not care of the headroom, my photography background learned me that you must not follow traditional rules too much. 95% of all compositions have been story-boarded just like you've seen.
I am aware that some of our creative choices do not work out as we hoped they would. BitterSweet has been a learning process on many levels. Thanks for your honest comments, they will make me think about different aspects with future projects. Have to be aware of the fact that some creative ideas do not have to work out great all the time ;-). Thankx!

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

The Isral guy is just jelious that he's never won a award before or he doesn't know what the word "creative" means.

For my self, I am constantly working on my cine technices and the Bitter Sweet short was very inspiring for me. If you take the budget and camera used for this short you can call it some very intelegent work. I know the shots and edits were done by "feel" and that's what it's all about. I think Peter totally deserved the award and his Photography background really shows. Some of those shots I would of never thought up if I was the one doing it.

I guess they never cross the line in films? or cut the heads off of people? Come on dude. I think that is being WAY over critical.

Peter, I wouldn't even waist your time replying to the Isral dude. Keep up the great work.

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Hello Mark,
Thanks for your reply, from which I understand that the other guy has a kind of reputation?

You mention our budget, welll, that was around $ 600, including the drinks at the premiere party. We hardly can call that a budget ;-)

Are you still interested in the dvd? Check the site for ordering details.

Greetings from Holland,

Peter

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Yes I would still like to buy the DVD. But we are now saving up for a new house and my wife will ring my balls if I buy anything, even if it's a dollar.

A couple weeks ago I would of got it. Please save a copy for me, eventually I will get it.

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Hi Mark,

Don't rush it. Good luck finding your new house AND with your wife's policy ;-)

Best regards,
Peter

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

This was a very good piece of work, Peter. Félicitations!!

I really like your camera work and composition. At first, i was thinking the location just look like Normandie. I'm too coming from a photography background and I'm just in the learning process of the movie. i will take your internet site in my bookmarks for sure and Looking forward to the next short.

Bravo et continu le bon travail!!

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Merci beaucoup!

Well, no wonder you recognize the beach shots, it's also the Northsea you are seeing in the film, only a couple of miles more to the north ;-)

Au revoir,
Peter

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Excellent camera shots and great story. I thought that old man did a great job and was able to show a lot of emotion in a short time. His face can tell a thousand words.

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Very nice piece. Your hard work paid off. The only thing I didn't like (which is totally subjective) was the music score for the middle of the short. It did not match the moving camera work.

Overall, I enjoyed it very much.

Best,

Anthony

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

I thought that it was techniclly good, but the story bored me after about 2 minutes. Sorry, that's just the truth.

Re: BitterSweet - award winning movie online

Very well made, the only thing that I didn't like was the cross fade from his wife going him on the beach to them young. Other than that, really nice, simple and well paced.
