Bitrates in exporting

Disclaimer: I'm a total noob. I bought a GH2 this summer and am learning the ins and outs.

I've been reading abit about the hack that ups the gh2 from a stock bitrate of 24 mbits/s to the neighbourhood of 100 mbits/s. Now I see this video http://vimeo.com/24052279 and read this guideline http://vimeo.com/help/compression that says vimeo does 5 mbits/s. I've done sample renders of 3, 5 & 20 mbits/s and notice some difference in quality. I'm just wondering:

1) would the high bit rate make a difference when posting to vimeo?
2) ignoring the hack for a second, if you were to share a video on a dvd, what bitrate would you render your video at?

thanks.

1) Yes it makes a difference. As you will have much more Information and details in you footage for postproduction, even if you at the end must encode and compress you movie for vimeo.

2) The encoding process for DVD or Vimeo.

a./ for Vimeo you got the recommendation already.
b./ for DVD: I encode with constat bitrate of 8Mbps and Audio at 224kbps. With this settings got the best quality and didn't have any problem playing back the DVD on any DVD player.

enjoy
