Check it out....
Over a year since I've been here and never posted footage or grabs.
This is the project I'm working on right now. I met the most interesting cat, he's 83 years old and has lived a profoundly amazing life, and he lives here in my wee little redneck town....working on a biographical series on him to sell locally.
This is him speaking at our local Historical Society.
And breaking it down for a school of troubled children...
He was a serious player in the civil rights movement...worked directly with JFK and brother, Johnson afterwards, and later Carter. Just about a year ago he recieved the first Ghandi Foundation Lifetime Achievment Award, and there is a book about him rolling off the press in a few months.
I met him sort of accidentally, and discovered a grand treasure of a man living right here....strangely, not many around here (population less than 10,000) know anything at all about him, but some people burned down his house when he moved back here in 1978 because some rednecks that hated him for his work in civil rights spread the word through the black community that he was the secret pres of the KKK....then spread through the redneck community that he made his money though the NAACP to pit as many people against him as possible.
He's a great guy.....sadly he now has Alzhiemers, and is beginning to deteriorate, but his long term memory is fantastic, and man does he have some bad ass stories! I've been hanging with him a lot lately, and he says I can do whatever I want with him movie wise, he just wants my friendship....says he's been very lonely for the last 20 odd years, said nobody comes to see him.
At the historical society talk, I caught on cam a conversation (after the talk) where he mentions having a computer with a lot of music on it and some wireless headphones...contrasted with the fact that he was born in a two room sharecroppers shack at the foot of Dugdown Mountain under the most poverty stricken circumstance, and grew up using handmade axes and tools with no paved roads for many many miles.
He has thousands of MP3's, and loves to get up a playlist and go walking in the yard, or even down to his sons house, with his wireless headphones on...he says he can hear it up to a 1/4 mile. I saw a couple of Van Halen in there, and he's got a lot of Bob Dylan, and loves Willie Nelson.
I'm letting him tell his entire life story on camera....every time I've filmed him speaking to an audience, they tell him he's run out of time before he even gets good and started. It does take him a while, but when youve got as large a well as he does to draw from, where do you start? What highlights do you hit?
His character is amazingly dynamic. The first night I filmed him, they pampered him, helping him walk and sit down....it gave the impression that he was fragile, but when I filmed him at the school...I had my cam set up in front of his chair at eye level and the first thing he did was get up and push it away and went to serious action! I had to really work to keep him framed, he was all over the place and speaking with fire!
By no means a good representation of this man, I've included a quickly put together handfull of sound bites just to let you get a slight feel for him beyond my words.
