Hello Jarred, Barry, Evin and the rest of the Bootcamp gurus and attendees -

Just wanted to give a big (Huge! Astronomical! Tremendous! Monumental! King-sized! Hehe... Thesaurus rocks.) "thank you" for the great LA Bootcamp. My team and I had a blast and got a ton of excellent information. The small investment of time and money will pay dividends many, many times over.

I agree, lots of useful info. Perhaps the best tip was to leave a DV tape in the camera at all times (a small riddle for you future bootcampers). BTW, I would like to get Evin's book/files combo. Do I do that here? or does Evin have a special site?

Evin's Book and Scene Files

Evin's Book and Scene Files

Yeah...I'd also like to order Evin's book & scene files. Any one have an idea how we can get them?

Hey Jarred or Barry, I dont know if this has been touched on before, but I want to go to one of these bootcamps pretty bad, yet I need to do some service for the Merchant Marine for about a year. So for people like me that just cant get to a bootcamp, do you guys have anything in the works as far as a Bootcamp on DvD set. Any info on how to learn more on my dvx other than Barry's awesome book would be much apprecited.
Jim

Yes, How do we buy Evin's book and scene files. Also what were those two monitors youn had in there (both expensive 8" and a 17" i believe)

There is a DVD set coming soon.

A Great Shout Out to Jared, Barry, and Evin

A Great Shout Out to Jared, Barry, and Evin

I would also like to say thank you to Barry, Jared, and Evin for sharing their time and insights with us. There was a great deal of information laid out that I would never have had access to otherwise, and getting their viewpoints as working cameramen was very important.
There was a nice balance to the whole event, and a great deal of planning for the event really paid off for us as owner/operators.
I would love it also if Evin would mention the model number of that incredible monitor that he had on his camera.

Thanks again everybody!

Thanks to everyone for attending! I'm glad to hear you found it valuable!

Evin's monitor was the BT-LH900A. The 17" was the BT-LH1700W.

The "Look Book" will be available on this site in about a month. If you absolutely have to have the scene files now in order to do a shoot you can pre-order it Via Pay-Pal for $49.95, I will e-mail you the files and when the books are ready I'll send you your copy.
PM me if your interested and I'll send you the correct e-mail address.
Thanks again guy's, I had a blast too.
E.

big thanks to Barry for leading us through every setting in the menu and describing exactly what affect it had on the image without dumbing it down. i easily got my money's worth in the first three hours of the presentation.

and not to diminish the value of what was covered in the afternoon, but i was a little disappointed in the post-production presentations. was hoping for a little more beyond how to ingest the footage into various systems on a laptop with a 800x600 screen size. maybe you'd count me as one of those people that have trouble letting go of the "offline/online" workflow, but in my world, the DVCPROHD codec is an offline codec. i don't have a single client that would accept anything but uncompressed (or Avid's DNxHD codec) for final delivery. but again, it was nice to know the particulars of each platform. i suppose what i was hoping for would take another couple of hours to cover though. you guys should consider renting a bay or two for your post demonstrations. and did i miss it or was the promise of a P2 Store demo mentioned but ultimately skipped? really wanted to see that workflow. i remember jarred holding it up and saying how it outclasses the firestore, but i don't think we got to see it in use.

btw, my copy of barry's book is missing pages and a few are loose inside (not attached to the binding). i appreciate that it was a gift for attending the bootcamp, but is there any chance i could get a complete copy?

oh, and i had to leave right at 6pm and never got to ask these questions... is monitoring disabled in the 720/24pn mode as well as firewire out? and what's the best way you can monitor the image on location? what kind of signal are you sending to your location broadcast monitors? the HVX doesn't have component or SDI outs does it? i assume the firewire stream is the best one could get, or is everyone monitoring with the s-video out?

Monitoring is not disabled, you can definitely monitor in 720/24pN mode.

Best way to monitor is through the analog component HD outputs to a monitor that supports it, such as the BT-LH1700.

Firewire monitoring isn't really all that practical yet; it'll become moreso when HD Rack comes out but until then the best monitoring is HD analog component (or getting an AJA converter to convert that to HD-SDI).

As for the book situation, PM me your address and I'll take care of it.

I apologize about the post section being a little light. We have so much to cover and most of our bootcampers are looking how to get to cutting footage as soon as possible.
In previous bootcamps we had just FCP workflow because none of the PC NLEs had proper support for P2 or DVCPro HD. So we were able to spend a little more time on delivery. As far as editing in uncompressed, that's great if you have the drive/computer speed to do so but I'd bet the majority of our attendees are delivering DVCPro-HD.
As far as the P2 store, we just didn't get to it.

Echoing Evin, with the very short time period we had, we were trying to hit the points most relevant to HVX users, and their top questions. Those are about the workflow with P2 and MXFs with the standard desktop editing applications out there. After the initial steps are taken, editing is pretty much as normal. I, too, would like to see more in this area, and perhaps with a two-day HVX Bootcamp in the future, there will be ample time.

that would be great! i know alot of DVD/EPK production houses that shoot with an F-900 package as their A camera, but would like to have cheaper alternatives for additional coverage. right now, everyone is using HDV cameras for that and (imo) it looks like ****. I know the HVX's were seriously considered, but rejected because post supervisors all over town didn't understand how to incorporate the tapeless system into an uncompressed online workflow. these people know it looks better than HDV, so I bet if you offered a bootcamp geared toward professionals with high-end delivery requirements, you could make bank here in los angeles. considering their rates for other classes, moviola digital would charge something like $1200 for a two day class like this.

oh and david, you might vaguely remember me. i was the guy that raised his hand to say that the Avid wouldn't play back with the composer window partialy off the screen or obscured by a bin. I can't tell you how many frustrated editors have run into that thinking their system has just gone to ****. :)

I enjoyed the Bootcamp overall, but I too was disappointed that the FCP session was allowed to run about an hour over the time it was alloted, which caused other material to get skimped over or get dropped completely. I think you guys need to stick to the schedule more firmly.

I enjoyed the Bootcamp, especially Barry Green's explanations of the HVX features. I was probably one of the few people that didn't own an HVX, and I was completly sold. I ordered one this morning with 2 p2 cards. I got the M2 as well. I didn't get much from the afternoon sessions, it felt a bit rushed and the Juniper studio session felt like a 1hour sales pitch.
On an other note, I think It would be great to have a hands-on bootcamp as well, where one could learn the basics of lighting, using a steadicam, a crane, etc...

Overall I was very happy, Barry and Evin were very knowledgable. Thank you.
