Big Screen HDTV

Okay, so I'm looking to replace my old 720p rear projector TV with something that I can view full 1080p on. It will be for the dual purpose of checking final blu-ray output on a screen that the typical HD viewer might be using, and also for my own personal use.

Would like to keep the budget under $1,800 and have a screen that is 50"-ish. I've pretty much ruled out plasma. I love the look of DLP, but it seems those are falling out of use for some reason.

Anyone have any suggestions?

OLED is the way to go!
(there goes your budget)

Haha! Yeah, the technology definitely looks interesting. Any opinions of how much of a difference it would actually make in average viewing? Brighter, yeah, but I'm the kind of person who likes accurate colors, not super-bright ones. Vivid settings are worthless.

Also, any recommendations as to brands?

EDIT: Oh wait . . . OLED! Yeah, that would kill the budget. I thought you were talking about LED backlit LCDs.

Plasmas look incredible. Why would you rule them out? I will only buy plasma from now on...

I really, REALLY dislike the dot pattern on the plasma screens. My eyes are good enough to see the grid even from normal viewing distance. I prefer continuous tone picture, which is why I went with a rear projector screen for my last purchase. It's also why I like the look of the DLP. But LCD is good enough. The pixels are small enough that I can't see them from normal distance.

That Vizio LED 55" does sound nice. And looks to be just above $1,800. I might need to look into that one.

720p plasmas do have adot pattern, but 1080p plasmas do not.

I got a 46" 1080p Viera 850ZU Panasonic for 850$. its delicious, 30,000:1 native 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast, and its made from the same panel that the panasonic reference monitor. It has a built in reference mode that makes it a calibrated monitor.. its incredible...

Its was an over stocked item, MSRP of 2999$. Keep youre eyes open, You can find amazing deals.

Hmmmm . . . I coulda sworn it was a 1080p plasma that I was looking at the other day. I'll have to check that out again and see.

The AVS forum is also a great place to "pre-shop" your purchase. You'll also sense the preference for plasma on that site. Like DVXUser, it's also a black hole for time though.

About 8 months or little more, I bought the Panasonic Viera TC-P50G25. I knew I'd be buying the TM700 camera, and I wanted the option of direct connect from the camera to the TV. I'd also looked at it side-by-side to about 30 other brands (literally) at Ultimate Electronics. Talked with 2 different, knowledgeable, sales guys over about an hour of looking and comparing and got very good and almost the same info. Anyway, bought what I though would be the best, and I am totally pleased with my purchase. Seems to me I only paid about $1200 then. Looks like they cost more now.
