big purchase help

The Marantz PMD671 was such a beast size wise. One of my first recorders was the PMD670, and I can't image trying to lug that thing around in a bag.

Well obviously you have never met a Nagra! The 671 +MixPre in a bag are around 1/4 the weight of a Nagra.

What wimps sound folks are becoming ;~) Think of the gym savings.

Depending on how many tracks one needs (and the mics to go with it) The 680 is a good value, however it too has issues. It freak'n eats batteries (8 AAs at a time), so an external battery system is a must IMO. It's also rather flimsy so a good bag is necessary. (another issue if depending on the internal batt.s) The menu and file/folder system are 'quirky', takes time to get used to and find the gotchas. It's easy to operate from take-to-take though via the front panel. (record/pause, track select, mixer, HP) Other parameter changes require access to the top panel switches / software menu. Obviously there's no TC. (except TOD in the BWF mode) The preamps are 'ok' but not great as one would expect for the price. It does however totally bypass the preamps in line mode, which is uncommon for budget machines.

"It's very much like the old HHB DAT deck and very easy to operate with out looking"
Yea Scott, same with the 680. BTW I still have my PortaDAT which hasn't seen the light of day in ten-or-so years.. don't even know if it works, I'll probably end up chucking it in the bin.

LOL even in that one I mention having written about it earlier and not remembering all the issues I had with it;~)

But closer!

2hrs on a set of batteries though would have stopped me dead.
