Big help with file formats

I have recently shot a project which I used 3 different cameras. Two of them used SD cards and one of them was tape. Now I have all my files on either .MTS and .VOB and I'm trying to import it to either FCP X or 7 and it won't let me.

Can anyone help me on what to do now? :undecided

1 - can you specify the cameras
<camera make> <camera model>
<resolution>
<frame rate> <p/i>

2- specify what you are doing and what the software is doing or any warning messages
file -> x -> window y -> click z -> warning "something is not right"

3- project settings before you start importing, ingesting, logging the files.

The digital camera is a Panasonic Lumix and the tape camera I'm not sure (it's not mine). I'm trying to import the files (both .mts and .vob) and it won't allow me (simply won't let me select them).

update: FC 7 will let me import the .VOB files but it comes without the sound...

anyone? I really need to make this project happens

I was able to fix the .VOB with "mpeg streamclip", making them DV files
now my only problem is with the .MTS files, which are the majority of them...

.mts files are a pain in the duff, unless you have the camera used and the clips and the original file structure intact on the camera's memory. Neither FCP/Compressor nor MPEG StreamClip can handle .mts files. Clipwrap, however, will simply re-wrap each clip with a new container (no conversion), such as .mov, allowing you then to use FCP, Compressor, or MPEG StreamClip.

In the end, you want all your files to be the same format before working with them in FCP. Are you working in HD or SD?

And just out of curiosity... from what source did you get VOB files? Those are typically from ripping DVDs, not from cameras.

thank you so much!
the VOB files come from a tape camera that the footage on the tape was burned into a dvd.

so what would you suggest me to do with the .MTS?
should I buy ClipWrap?
Is there any free solution for this?
should I have all of them on .VOB?

thank you!!

VOB is the absolute last thing that you want. Whomever delivered the footage to you never should have burned it to DVD format in the first place. If you can, you need to get the original footage from the tape, and have it converted to your editing codec of choice. If you're working in HD with FCP, ProRes LT is going to be a good starting place. If you're on an older system that cannot handle that, DVCPRO HD is a viable solution. But no matter what, you want all of your footage conformed to the same editing codec.

There are some "free" and lower-cost solutions out there that can handle MTS files, but they butcher the footage and they don't have the best output selections for the footage. Don't waste your time or money on them. Get ClipWrap.
