Beware of lasers - ouch

Luis, Do you think the ghosting went away or it was indeed permanent?

Jason

Hey Jason -
The cameraman posted on vimeo that it was permanent - he's sent his cam off to Canon to see if anything can be done about it but hasn't yet heard back.

So yeah...definitely stay away from lasers.

Wow! You can clearly see where it messes with it the first time, too, at about :03. That's funky, sucks to have that happen.

I guess we'll see if Canon does anything about it...

Not sure if you meant it that way, but just to be clear - this isn't a 'canon issue,'
it's something that can happen to any CMOS sensor as far as I know.
These examples just both happen to be from the 5D.

There are a bunch of old threads on reduser covering this same issue and for this reason I have always turned down club work.

Interestingly enough, criminals have used laser pointers in the past to disable security cameras.

Wow... never though of that one... Have shot lasers like that on 16mm film and had no issues..

I'll keep that one in the memory bank for future reference...

Cheers

Any idea about CCDs with Laser? Our venue might be picking a laser up and knowing whether i need to make it a HUGE deal to keep lasers off the cam.

Just wondering if using a ND filter and a faster lens (to counteract the ND filter) would prevent it.

I bet CCD gets hurt permanently as well. Over here we had incidents of idiots pointing laser torches at helicopters in 1 case an emergency heli on its way to a hospital! They are talking of legal restrictions now. Supposedly there are illegal 5 Watt laser torches available on epain. With those you can permanently damage a human eye!

Lasers are concentrated beams of light.

If you use a ND 64.0 (not ND64) perhaps you can avoid that.

Just use a RED sensor from the future so you can bring those shadows back in post.

Seems to me that in the Madrid example, if the sensor was harmed, people's eyes could have been hurt as well. That puts the blame on the laser operator.

Lasers also Destroy Imaging Sensors on Aircraft.. FLIR sensor, and others that use CMOS chips...... Thats why Pointing a Lase at a commercial Airplane is I do believe Illegal
