Better to use RR DSLR Field Cinema Deluxe Bundle v2 w/ lcd viewfinder OR ext monitor?

Hi All,

I own the 7D with battery grip and LCDVF Viewfinder, and I'm about to purchase the Red Rock DSLR Field Cinema Deluxe Bundle v2.

Should I buy the "microLink4 Offset Kit (flat version)" ($179) so that I can use my LCDVF in conjunction with the Field Cinema Deluxe Bundle?

Or should I buy an external monitor instead?

On the one hand, It seems like using the RR rig with an LCDVF would be good because it would add another point of contact and it would allow me to achieve proper exposure when I'm outside with glaring sun. Another reason to go this route is because I already own the LCDVF.

On the other hand, an external monitor would allow for a focus puller, it would give me a bigger screen for achieving critical focus, and it would allow me to have my peripheral vision, which I find important when walking while shooting.

Obviously having both options is ideal, but if you had to choose, which configuration do you think provides for an overall better shooting experience and why?

Thanks for your feedback!
Mike

I often see people buy the microLink4 Offset with the Field Cinema Bundle. This is a great option to have for when you need to shoot in the sun, and to start out with. Ultimately, people like to have the monitor as their main source for pulling, especially with the 7D's HD output while recording. I personally only own a monitor with my 7D, and when I shoot in the sun, my sunshade seems to work nicely.

One thing to keep in mind while using your 7D and battery grip is that the lens is going to be substantially higher now than without the grip, so you'll have to purchase a microRiser with an additional set of rods. There really isn't much you gain by using the battery grip, since with the Redrock baseplate you have access to the battery door for simply battery swaps.
