i own and hvx200 and its more than i could ever ask for.. the quality is amazing.. i have 1 problem however... the quality after encoding out to dvd. i currently use vegas with the build in main concept mpeg encoder. its got a pal dvd preset which i tweek a bit to try and get better quality out of... however im still not happy with it, the image is much fuzzier in my opinion to the original.. i know compression looses a bit of quality.. my main question is ...

are there any specific settings in the main concept mpeg encoder for a sharper image? i dont mind having a larger filesize. Ive tried boosting the bitrate a bit but still it looks the same.

also..

would those real time mpeg2 encoder cards give a better result than software encoders?

thanx !

I don't particularly care for the MainConcept encoder. On a PC, it would like to ProCoder or CinemaCraft.

But without knowing the length of the video in minutes, its target and maximum bit rate, and how you encoded audio, I can't help much.

Hi,

The best encoding for the money (IMHO) is TMPGEnc (Tsunami). I think it does as good a job or better than Procoder at much less the cost.

If you get the TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress, you get more goodies like AC3 encoding, but you already have AC3 with Vegas Pro, so you don't need that. You can get plain vanilla TMPGEnc for $37 or so, add your AC3 audio and you're in business. Of course, being in PAL-land, you can certainly get by with MPEG audio.

All that said, I really haven't found the Main Concept to really be that bad, but if David C. has his problems with it, I wouldn't disregard his comments, either.

I would likely suggest a 2Pass VBR of 5500k/bs, and an Audio bitrate of 192k/bs if audio isn't musical.

Good luck!
