i use to read that AVCHD codec produce better image quality than the MJPEG codec (at same bitrate) but i just read in the forum : " For best grading latitude, the patch's 35Mbps MJPEG mode produces 4:2:2 color depth, whereas the AVCHD encoder only supports 4:2:0 color. In addition, the MJPEG encoder's average bitrate holds up better in low-light conditions than AVCHD." so i no longer know what to believe, any explanations ?

i've tried both, with various hacks, and they look identical to my eyes on a 30" lcd color calibrated monitor running at 2560X1600 resolution.
my advice it to hack your camera and try the various setting out for yourself to see what works best for your situation. mjpeg eats up a lot of card space, but, you can color correct the hell out of it before it starts to break up(also good for green screen work), whereas the avchd starts to get "crunchy" if you grade it to much.

Also remember that mjpeg only comes in 720/30, or 1440X816 with the 75mb peak performance patch. the latter upsizes to 1080/30 very well. but, the trade off is space. it will eat up around 50+mb/second.
I've tried both in low light, and I really don't see any difference. YMMV

I did a test with a used f1.4 lens I got on ebay with the 75mb patch and the MJPEG looked better in low light at low ISO, but at max iso the AVCHD looked better. There was a ton of FPN on the MJPEG at 1600iso, while the AVCHD looked better.

Ultimately, do a few test shots yourself and even if one is technically better, you may prefer the look of the other. Personally I'd stick with AVCHD for the 24p.
