GH4 Better editing mac setup

Using Premiere CC would I be better with a 2013 core i5 3.4 and with NVIDA GTX 775 2BG video ram.

or a 2011 core i7 2.93 with ATI 5750 1GB video ram?

I mean would Premiere use the extra video ram and eliminate some of the issues I'm having with stuttering on playback.

Also I still have a TON of old FireWire800 drives that I would need to access with a Thunderbolt cable - any issues there?

thanks

Honestly, your best bet is to build you own Windows machine. You'll not only get better performance on everything for the same money, or the same performance for less money, but the Adobe suite just plain runs better on Windows.

I was told that Premiere is better optimized for NVidia GPUs; you want one with not only a good amount of RAM, but also a lot of "CUDA cores".

AMD card has 720 stream processors versus 1344 "CUDA cores" in the NVidia card. So not only does the NVidia have more cores, Premiere will also use them more optimally.

For the CPUs, the i5 would most likely be an Ivy Bridge and the i7 would be a Lynnfield. The i5 already outperforms it in clock speed, but the i5 is also newer architecture so it is more efficient per-clock than that i7.

The only thing that the i7 setup would have over the i5 is hyperthreading, but even with a process that takes advantage of that, like rendering, I think the i5 would still win out due to its higher clock speed and number of instructions per clock.

So in short, I'd say go for the i5 + NVidia.

Yeah well no way can I pop for the MacPro and since all my old stuff is mac based no way I'm gonna move to windows... too many legacy projects, too much
bought and paid for software... so looks like the newer i5 it is. THANKS.

"Also I still have a TON of old FireWire800 drives that I would need to access with a Thunderbolt cable - any issues there?"

I would start investing now and transfer the data to usb 3 or thunderbolt drives (I have just done the same)

I use a 2013 mac i7 with fusion drive (so sorry i never went SSD completely) and my new 2014 MBR i7 is brilliant with FCPX and an external G-Drive. (NB the iMac has 32gb ram and the MBP has 16gb so don't think its all to do with Ram)..

again, I don't know Premier CC well but if you work in Proxy then I can't see a problem.. However, if like me, you are venturing into 4k editing on a regular basis you will need the best machine possible i.e. Joe1946 has a mac pro which is made for 4k editing

NB i still get a 'rolling ball' on my MBP when editing 4k or using a high res effect like one of the super motionvfx title blockbuster or any 3d rendering etc...

gaddster-

as someone looking at the gh4 for its ability to shot 4k and down-rez to 1080p, why are you cutting in 4k if you can't yet deliver in 4k?

(i ask out of naivete not to be argumentative. i'm truly just trying to understand and appreciate the workflow of current gh4 users.)

thanks in advance to those who care to share.

be well.

Rob, I have a project coming up which requires a lot of client testimonials, historically i take 2 cameras and do a close up and medium shot then edit is post (can be a pain matching the shots if not the same camera).. so i will film in 4k with a medium shot and zoom in for a close shot (exporting the final version to 1080 of course. Im also going to try using 4k for some shots where I currently use a slider to see what the results are like (fixing and sliding in post of course)

its also a good 'sell' to clients if you offer 4k as part of your service (even if they don't want it)

If there is any chance you could wait a few months... broadwell is on the way. The entire Mac line will most likely see an upgrade. The iMac will, at that point, be much closer, if not surpass, the current Mac Pro 6 core (hopefully).

Think the OP has a choice between 2 older models (either his own or second hand options due to budget).. my next purchase was going to be a Mac Pro 6 core so maybe i will wait ;-)

Got it. Yea, I'm in the same boat as you. I'd really love to jump on the 5k iMac. It's a great looking machine, but the performance boost is not there. In less than 6 months, we will see a revamped iMac with Intels Broadwell architecture. It will definitely be a workhorse machine at a great price point. Buying one now is definitely risky as it will 100% be outdated, by far, in the next 6 months.

I'm the OP and I can't wait... Gotta spend the money NOW. Also I do not edit in 4K I do 4k files on a 1080 timeline as many others do for the wide / tight shot with 1 camera - and sometime for pan & scan.

Harry does your budget only stretch to the 2 models mentioned in your initial post or are you also contemplating new?

Broadwell is unlikely to be much faster - given what I've seen Intel is targeting more power efficiency increases and integrated GPU performance.
