best Zeiss lens package for new af100

....but if you could take the turbo charger off and carry it forward to your next Toyota?

For likely decades later... :P

Super-Speeds are still super popular rental items despite being made in 'West Germany', a political border that has not existed for over 20 years. :)

I'd have to say anyone who buys something that gives a RoI for potentially 25+ years has to be pretty happy.

Thanks Erik...Some very helpful information...Again, congrats for your award. And as your fellow DP's have said, you're the talent, the AF a very nice tool.

Thanks vincent6805!

I cant count how many times this board has helped me. Great group here.

I now have my working set of PL lenses and couldn’t be happier. Duclos 11-16, Red Zoom 17-50 and a Zeiss CP.2 85mm. Thats a good range and they play very well together. I like most people when they got the AF-100 bought and tried several different type of lenses and adapters. Nikon being my favorite for the obvious reason that you have iris control.
When I rented and shot with a set of Zeiss CP.2’s I couldn’t believe how perfect it was on the camera. I knew that was the road I had to take. Not the most frugal way to go but I do intend to be a DP for a few more years, and will be able to move to the next camera whatever that may be with my PL lenses. Sure they are all zooms but they are all very sharp or at least sharp enough. The Red 17-50 is great. That lenses was practically made for the camera. Its like a 34-100.

I rented a Sony F3 last week and that camera is nice in low light. 12db is crazy clean! My set of PL lenses played very well with it. I was surprised by the S35 sensors field of view as well. It’s significant and the 85mm on it is awesome! So if I had invested only in MFT lenses I wouldn’t have been able to use them on the F3 or any other camera really. That’s not good.

I’m not saying don’t buy MFT lenses, just realize they can be a limited investment. I also have a GH2 and like that camera a bunch so I also own several MFT lenses. Lumix 7-14 is crazy cool and the Voigtlander 25mm is stunning.

Thank you Erik. When I get my Af100, I'll rent some lenses prior to purchase. Other than Zeiss, if I had the money, I'd probably consider cooke. Probably consider.

An entry level Cooke 6 lens Panchro set is around $50K
A single Cooke S4/i 50mm is almost $20K.

I have a few older Cooke Speed Panchros in my kit.
If tax time wasn't right around the corner I'd be looking for a complete set of rehoused Speed Panchros in PL mount.

Really?! I forgot they raised prices. I bought one of the early sets, and it was *only* (lol) $43,000 for the 6-set. Is it up to $50k?!

If you can find a really well taken care of set of PL'd Speed Panchros, those are one of the most beautiful vintage lens sets I can think of. Gorgeous. They were used for the period/fantasy portions of this years academy nominated Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen, and on many other big films wanting a beautiful vintage look.

DVXuser and friend-o-mine, Hunter Richards used them on this video: Obviously due to Hunter's mad skillz, you can see the type of aesthetic that was brought out of these lenses.

I would like to try Cooke myself. Or maybe I shouldn’t :)

Be careful, they are addictive :) I've had the great pleasure of working with Ryan's Cookes on a feature last year and they are wonderful. Just have to explain to my wife why she can't have a new car this year.

I have found that when buying things like sports cars, expensive lenses, and the like, it helps tide things over if you buy your wife nice jewelry.

Ryan, please pass on to your friend what a wonderful piece of work that is. Not only in shot set up, photography but a well written, emotional piece in a few minutes. I just looked at a set of cooke lenses, seven i believe it was, for 44K. A bargain it seems. LoL.

I sure will, but Hunter Richards is a DVXuser forum member <- (PM him if you have any kudos or questions)... and yes, it is a wonderful piece and very emotional too.

Regarding the Cookes, it was 44k for the Speed Panchros?! The vintage ones? That is almost as expensive as the new Panchro/i's. Can you point me in that direction? I'd love to see what was up with that.

I watched a PL'd VanDiemen rehoused anamorphic 50mm Speed Panchro go by on Ebay once, and I almost cried. Somewhere out there, someone bought my dream lens. Now a set of those would be priceless.

Regarding Zeiss, there were plenty of Standard and Super Speed lens sets floating around just 5 years ago, but I'm afraid with all the RedOnes, F3's, AF100's, C300's, Scarlets, Epics, etc, etc... they are almost impossible to find and if you do, is about 3x the cost they were just a couple years ago. Supply and demand. And there is way more demand than there is supply. 44k for a 7-set might not be so far fetched after all.

Imagine buying those in 1960! 50 years of rentals plus reselling them for 30k-40k?! That is an investment!

I AC'd a job about a month ago with a very nicely maintained set of SuperSpeeds paired with a Cooke zoom, and in the set we got the less common 65mm. Usually the SS sets I get are 18, 25, 35, 50, and 85. This 65mm is a rare pleasure, as I really like the 65mm length. The 135mm Super-Speed is another less common length that I am happy to see in the wild. Someone told me a 40mm (my favorite FL on S35mm) Super Speed exists but was/is extremely rare. I've yet to see it in the wild or even in a photograph, so for now, it's my Big Foot of lenses.

The less common 65mm Super Speed.
If you find a 40mm please send me a photo!

I'll PM you friend with some kudos, we can all use a few of those. As for the Cooke lens set, I googled cooke and found this set. Since I don't have 44K it was dreaming and I didn't save the link. I believe it was Cooke site itself. The article mentioned that they were bringing the Panchro line back. I'll be some help on my project once I get funding, maybe we can work together. I get a feeling you can school me, big time. I believe in the adage of an empty cup. Screw the half full one.
