Virtually all the web hosting companies used shared IP addresses.

One site can easily grab all the bandwidth. bluehost seems to do a better job of adjusting for this than go daddy,

^ +1 for hostgator

I've used 'em for at least 4 years and only once ran into a bandwidth issue, which they resolved pretty quickly (booting the hog).

But David S is right on re: shared servers. They're all shared by default 'cause that's the cheapest option for customers. But almost all of them also offer dedicated servers if you want to pay for them.

Only when you start having more granular requirements do the differences between hosting companies become more pronounced in the shared hosting category. For example: For shared hosting on Drupal based websites, Bluehost allows up to 128mb memory allocation to php compared to 32mb on 1and1, but you can't have more than 1,000 mysql tables cumulatively which limits the number of total Drupal sites on a single account and you don't drive into the brickwall the way you do at 1and1. Bluehost doesn't accomodate the registration requirements for .ca domains whereas godaddy does. So for a client using a Drupal facilitated site but having a .ca domain, the domain was registered on godaddy but is hosted on bluehost as an AOD and having the zone record at godaddy configured to point to the AOD IP at Bluehost. Dedicated servers and the rack hosting services at various companies similarly have issues which become more apparent when requirements become more granular.

Another thing to look at is their tech support. One of the reasons I went with InMotion is because they have their own support staff, rather than contracting that out to a 3rd company. In my previous experience with another hosting company, the 3rd party support was almost as good as no support at all.

You'll also find that many companies offer similar software packages. The software like Wordpress or Joomla, shopping carts, photo galleries, etc is bundled up by 3rd parties in a way that's usually pretty easy to install & administer.

As someone else mentioned it depends a lot on what you expect from the host. If you just have plain html files an economy host like 1and1 works fine. If you want to use PHP, drupal, etc. in a linux environment and want lots of flexibility, outstanding support, and excellent up time I'd suggest westhost. If you need a .net platform I prefer applied innovations (they keep pretty up to date with the moving .net technologies... maybe 1and1 has finally moved beyond .net 2.0)
