Best ways to record in-camera and laptop

What is the best way to record to your laptop? After all this time, I haven't tried it yet and I just want to get an idea of what I am doing before I do it. Do I record through my editing program? Is there another program to use? Do I have to use a program at all? After typing this, I feel very stupid...but you gotta learn somehow! ;D

The only way to learn is to ask questions... or wait until a trainee asks it for ya. ;)

The best way is to use the program called DV Rack, there is tons of discussion about it on this form. Just try searching. You can try it free for a week.

DV Rack is definitely the best way.

Other ways would be to just capture video through your editing program... but DV Rack was designed for it, and even captures "pre-roll" so it'll start capturing BEFORE you hit the record button. Plus you get a quality monitor, waveform & vectorscope, preview monitor, audio monitor... all sorts of other handy tools...

Yes, I used to do it through Vegas capture, but ever since I gor DV Rack I'll never look back. Last weekend I downloaded an update that lets me to set the field monitor to a 16:9 aspect ratio, and my laptop (one of those tiny Sony VAIO toys) has a wide screen format, so you just hit Alt+Enter and you have a full screen, 10" field monitor. It's not a CRT, but it works great for me.

Thank you everyone. I will be trying DV Rack and it seems from all the discussion, may end up purchasing. :)
