Best way to travel on a plane with camera gear/ can the be x-rayed.

I've been to a few "3rd world" countries (Central/South America), and their airport security staff have always completely ignored my camera equipment (both incoming and outgoing). They're more interested in getting their "entry fee" or "exit fee" or whatever they call it.

I travel all the time... camera is in my hand the whole way... just be careful with batteries as some can be finicky with the Lithium-Ion content...

You should find that info and keep a copy with your passport...

Also I always have the last shoot left on my cards.. can be interesting showing customs police etc what the camera's like...

PS.. I take on board the Camera with mic, G4 17' laptop... spare battery (camera and laptop).. 3 x 160gb Lacie Firewire drives.. Headphones..
160GB ipod.. basically everything I need to shoot with... If the plane goes down I want to be BUTTONED ON when it happens...

More specifically, South America. How much are these "fees" for bringing a camera and labtop into the country? Are there any special permits or can you just point and shoot?
