Best way to shoot SOLDIER RUNNING

My question revolves around mainly getting a shot of the character that is running towards the camera, but the camera is also shaking keeping the solider bust centered on screen.

I know to use high shutter speed to give it the chaotic look, but how do I keep the chaos that i want to create, controlled?

thanks

ITS a trial and error thing, ive tried it on a steady cam with rubber bushings so to get movement that was some what controlled(mounting cam on the base plate with rubber bushings to get some movement but not to much. or try it on a jib if you can, but the whole thing will be to try different things until you stumble on something you like.

Of course, the real question is about the soldier's motivation....

Best result I've had is to hand hold the camera using a sport finder.
Really need to choreograph the action carefully beforehand too.

Found 70% rate to be best- going 100% (running rate) didn't 'play' well in the final analysis.

Shot both leading and following (although the shot list called only for the following).
Final cut used both angles.

Running backward, holding a heavy rig (film cam), and not falling is an art.
Should be easier with the DVX.

May consider a FigRig type support for the camera- that makes it easier to hold.
Forget about the viewfinder- fashion a sport finder out of wire (I think we used a bit of coat hanger).
You make a square of that to fit your framing, at the approximate distance to camera you intend to maintain- then sight your subject in that as you do your runs.

I don't know that a faster shutter makes it look more chaotic though.
Try slower too- for blurs and such.

Oh yeah, have someone (or two) running along with you to guide and catch in case of a stumble.

Good luck.

Never underestimate how much camera work can go into a shot you think looks good.
I have been on shoots where many hours had been spent just setting up for and choreographing the camera's path of movement.
If that cool shot was easy - everyone would have been doing it for 50 years now.
