Best way to shoot cars streaming..

Whats the best technique if even possible, with the HMC150, to film streets and highways at night in order to get the effect of lights streaming and such? I've heard to use the frame rate hack with the HVX but you can't do that with the HMC150 right? And I doubt 1/15 is low enough rate.

Yeah, I don't think it's possible with the hmc150. Maybe it's possible to create the effect in post? Use some kind of motion blur, perhaps?

Not having timelapse is the ONLY thing I miss about the HVX. It was really cool and when I first got my cam.. I went a little crazy with it. I'm not sure if there's a hack like the 2f a sec one for the HVX.

Possibly you might be able to change the shutter angle and see if that will give you trails.

Maybe you can still shoot in 24p and find an After Effects/Motion plugin to get the streaks. It should be fairly simple math to add the frame's luminosity data together.

Yes, and make sure your shutter speed is 1/24th. Just as TigerFX said, computing the average of multiple frames is simple task. If there's no tool to achieve this yet, it should be pretty straightforward to develop one.

how about with the 170 i been trying like mad to make it work? I think im retarded though, i follow the steps everyone else seems to be using but it just doesnt look right to me.

With the 170, use the frame rate hack to get 2fps, and set your syncro scan shutter at 360.0d. You should get wonderful light streaks that way.

so im guessing it wont be available for the hmc? id be willing to pay someone to figure out how to get it on the hmc (the frame rate hack).

I found that I could achieve this effect in After Effects by using CC Wide Time as long as you shoot from a tripod. It will add ghost images of adjacent frames out to as many as 6 frames in one or both directions.

It's just kinda depressing =/ I love the HMC anyways but I wish I could do this effect its always great to use in scenes with mellow music or contemplative scenes or just for fun.

If I understand the Time > Echo filter correctly, it should also give you a similar result (set it to 'screen' or 'add')

There isn't a hack for the HMC since AVCHD has no ability to standard frame rates, unlike DVCPRO HD which has support for variable frame rates. They would have to create a feature that recorded the video at speeds other than real time.

I would be plenty happy if they just gave us some longer exposures... why not??? DVX went 1/6. Not only are the "trails" a useful effect, but the added exposure is a huge help in the dark (making the picture look much better). 1/15 and 1/30 allow you to get a psudo progressive result from the lower bitrate modes, but think about how sharp shots in 6mps would be if it could run a shutter of 1/2! That could give the encoder only 1 frame to compress for each GOP.
